The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has officially announced a three-match ODI series between England Women and Ireland Women, scheduled for September 2026. The series will follow the conclusion of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, which is set to be hosted in England and Wales from June to July 2026. These ODIs are part of the next cycle of the ICC Women’s Championship and carry significant weight in the qualification pathway for the 2029 ICC Women’s ODI World Cup.

Key Highlights of the Announcement

- England Women will host Ireland Women for three ODIs in September 2026.

- The series is part of the ICC Women’s Championship, impacting 2029 World Cup qualification.

- Matches will be held in Leicester, Derby, and Worcester.

- Ireland aims to use the series to strengthen their bid for future World Cup inclusion.

Series Schedule and Venues

- First ODI

- Date: September 1, 2026

- Venue: The County Ground, Leicester

- Second ODI

- Date: September 3, 2026

- Venue: The County Ground, Derby

- Third ODI

- Date: September 6, 2026

- Venue: New Road, Worcester

All venues are located in England’s Midlands region, offering logistical ease for teams and fans alike.

Strategic Importance for Ireland

- Ireland Women are not part of the current ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

- The upcoming series against England is viewed as a stepping stone toward qualifying for the 2029 ODI World Cup.

- Cricket Ireland’s Director of Cricket, Richard Holdsworth, emphasized the importance of early fixture announcements for long-term planning and preparation.

England’s Packed Home Calendar

- The ODI series against Ireland will follow England’s hosting of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup from June 12 to July 15, 2026.

- England Women will also face New Zealand in a bilateral series earlier in the summer.

- The team is expected to feature a mix of seasoned players and emerging talent, with Nat Sciver-Brunt likely to lead the squad through a busy home season.

Historical Context and Rivalry

- The two teams last met in a three-match ODI series in Belfast in 2024.

- England won the first two matches convincingly, but Ireland stunned the hosts with a dramatic last-ball victory in the final game.

- That win marked a historic moment for Irish women’s cricket and set the stage for a more competitive rivalry.

Fan Engagement and Broadcast Plans

- The ECB is expected to announce ticketing and broadcast details closer to the series.

- With the Women’s T20 World Cup preceding the ODIs, fan interest is projected to be high.

- The Midlands venues offer accessibility for traveling supporters and local cricket enthusiasts.

Looking Ahead

- The series will serve as a litmus test for Ireland’s progress in women’s cricket.

- England will aim to consolidate their dominance while experimenting with squad depth.

- Both teams will use the series to fine-tune strategies ahead of the next ICC Championship cycle.
