Alpha Box Office Day 2: Alia Bhatt Starrer Faces Challenging Weekend

Alpha, the first female-led film in the YRF Spy Universe starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, has seen a modest start at the box office. With a first-day net collection of ₹9.25 crore, the film faces a challenging weekend as it looks to sustain momentum and improve upon its opening figures.

MUMBAI – The Yash Raj Films (YRF) action-thriller Alpha, headlined by Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, is currently navigating its second day at the domestic box office. The film, which arrived in theaters on July 3, 2026, as the latest installment in the expansive YRF Spy Universe, has recorded a slower-than-anticipated start compared to its high-budget predecessors in the franchise.

According to trade data from Sacnilk, Alpha opened with a domestic net collection of approximately ₹9.25 crore on its first day. While this figure notably outpaced the opening-day performance of Bhatt’s 2024 film Jigra, it remains the lowest debut for any film within the celebrated YRF Spy Universe.

Box Office Performance Analysis

On its second day, Saturday, the film faced a expected dip in early trends, a common occurrence for films with lukewarm word-of-mouth. According to early estimates provided by industry trackers, the film earned roughly ₹5.87 crore in India by Saturday evening, with projections indicating a potential push toward the ₹11–12 crore mark by the end of the day as night shows conclude.

While the film’s opening was modest, the distribution strategy—spearheaded by Yash Raj Films—ensured a widespread theatrical release across more than 7,500 shows nationwide. Despite the large screen count, the pre-release anticipation did not translate into the high-volume advance bookings typically associated with the Spy Universe franchise, which has previously featured heavy-hitters like Pathaan, Tiger 3, and War 2.

Contextualizing the YRF Spy Universe

Alpha marks a significant pivot for the franchise as the first female-led project, directed by Shiv Rawail. The narrative follows two elite agents, played by Bhatt and Sharvari, as they embark on a high-stakes mission against an adversary portrayed by Bobby Deol.

The film also includes a much-discussed special appearance by Hrithik Roshan, who reprises his role as Kabir from the War series. Industry analysts note that the film's success is critical for the studio's expansion plans. While established male-led entries like Pathaan and Tiger 3 achieved massive opening-day figures in the range of ₹50–70 crore, Alpha’s entry into the universe is being evaluated through a different lens—one that tests the audience's appetite for female-driven action spectacle within the same cinematic ecosystem.

Financial Expectations and Market Impact

For producers, the weekend performance is crucial. Trade experts suggest that the film requires a steady trajectory over the next 48 hours and a strong hold during the upcoming weekdays to move toward profitability. With production costs reported to be on the higher side, Alpha must rely on a combination of domestic footfalls and overseas contributions to balance its initial investment. As of the end of Day 1, the worldwide gross collection stood at approximately ₹16.10 crore.

FAQ

Why is the performance of Alpha considered a "slow start"?

In the context of the YRF Spy Universe, which has established massive precedents with films like Pathaan and War 2 earning upwards of ₹50 crore on their opening days, Alpha's ₹9.25 crore debut is statistically lower, leading to analysis regarding its market position.

Is Alpha a part of the official YRF Spy Universe?

Yes, it is confirmed by the studio as the latest chapter in the franchise, featuring character cameos and narrative connections that link it to the broader universe.

Can the film still recover its costs?

Industry experts indicate that recovery depends heavily on the film’s "trend"—or how well it maintains its collection numbers through the weekend and the following work week.
