Battling Tariffs with Homegrown Pride - Modi Says ‘Vocal for Local’ is the Answer!

On August 2, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a powerful message from his constituency, Varanasi, championing ‘Swadeshi’ (indigenous) products and self-reliance as global economic instability and steep new US tariffs cast a shadow over India’s trade prospects. Addressing a massive gathering in Banauli village, he not only responded to ongoing international economic challenges but set forth a bold, people-powered economic roadmap for India.

A Rallying Cry for Swadeshi

PM Modi placed the call for ‘Vocal for Local’ at center stage, asking every Indian to consider the origin of the products they use. “Whatever we buy, we should ask ourselves—has an Indian toiled to make this? If it has been made by the sweat of our people, with their skills, that product is Swadeshi for us,” he emphasized. He appealed to citizens and traders alike to sell and purchase locally-made goods, asserting that this would be the “truest service to the country”.

He extended his plea especially to small shopkeepers, urging them to prioritize Swadeshi goods with the upcoming festival and wedding seasons—traditionally periods of high consumer spending. Making purchases “Made in India,” he said, would not only support local jobs but honor the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi and strengthen the nation's economic backbone.

Navigating Global Uncertainty and Trump’s Tariffs

Framing his Swadeshi pitch within the wider global economic context, Modi warned of mounting international uncertainty and shifting economic priorities among world powers. “The world economy is facing instability and uncertainty. In such times, countries are focusing solely on their own interests,” he observed. With the US, under President Donald Trump, recently levying 25% tariffs on Indian exports as part of a broader global trade shake-up, the Prime Minister stressed the need for economic vigilance and resilience.

He called on all political parties, regardless of affiliation, to unite behind Indian interests and promote indigenous goods, stating, “If we want India to become the third-largest economy, every political party and every leader, keeping aside their hesitations, must work in the nation's interest and awaken the spirit of Swadeshi among the people”.

Development and Welfare Front and Centre

During his Varanasi visit, Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 52 projects valued at around ₹2,200 crore, spanning infrastructure, education, healthcare, and cultural heritage. He highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to uplift farmers, supporting nearly 9.7 crore farmers with the latest ₹20,500 crore installment disbursed under the PM-KISAN scheme. With schemes like the newly-approved PM Dhan Dhanya Agriculture Scheme, Modi reinforced the focus on improving rural economies and supporting backward districts.

India’s Path Forward

Reiterating India’s ambitions to become the world’s third-largest economy, Modi outlined the collective responsibility: “Only through collective effort can we fulfill the dream of a developed India.” He reminded citizens that adopting Swadeshi is not just about nationalism but about securing the livelihoods of millions of Indian farmers, workers, and entrepreneurs—particularly in volatile global conditions.

Opposition, Security, and Patriotic Appeals

Not shying away from politics, Modi criticized opposition parties for vote-bank politics and for failing to recognize India’s security advancements and indigenous defense achievements, referencing initiatives like Operation Sindoor and the impact of Indian-made weaponry. “Whoever attacks India will not be safe even in hell,” he asserted, underlining the government’s focus on both national security and economic sovereignty.

Looking Ahead

With the world’s attention turned to tariff wars and global realignments, India’s leadership, through Modi’s Varanasi address, has unmistakably signaled a course rooted in self-belief, unity, and Swadeshi resolve. As India balances external pressures with internal priorities, the Prime Minister’s words aim to ignite a movement larger than policy—one driven by millions of individual consumer choices in every corner of the country.
