The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert forecasting heavy rains and thunderstorms in Delhi on Saturday, August 10, 2025, signaling a significant weather shift after a warm and partly sunny Friday. Residents and commuters are advised to prepare for disrupted outdoor activitie...

Key Highlights: IMD Weather Predictions for Delhi and Surroundings

Saturday, August 10: The IMD forecasts a day marked by heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across the National Capital Region (NCR). Intense rain showers are expected intermittently through the day, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.

Friday, August 9: Preceding the wet spell, Delhi will experience a day with partly sunny skies and very warm temperatures, acting as the calm before the storm.

Sunday, August 11: The weather will remain unsettled with continuing rain and thunderstorm activity early in the day, gradually clearing by the afternoon leading to sunshine filtered through high clouds.

Early Week Outlook: Monday is expected to bring sunshine with high cloud cover, offering a brief respite. However, scattered afternoon showers are likely on Tuesday, followed by intermittent rain showers in the morning on Wednesday with overall cloudy conditions.

Detailed Weather Conditions and Impact

Temperatures over the weekend are forecast to hover between a high of around 31°C and lows near 26°C, tempered by cloud cover and rain. The humidity will remain elevated, adding to the muggy feel typical of the monsoon season.

Wind speeds on Saturday will increase moderately with gusts accompanying the thunderstorm activity, mainly from the southeast at around 10-15 km/h.

Visibility may reduce locally during heavy downpours, impacting road travel and air traffic. Authorities caution for slippery roads and localized waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Thunderstorms heighten risks of power disruptions and falling trees, so residents are advised to take precautions especially in vulnerable zones.

Precautionary Measures and Advisory

The IMD urges citizens to limit unnecessary travel on Saturday and to ensure safety practices such as avoiding underpasses prone to water accumulation.

People should stay indoors during thunderstorm spells, avoid touching metal objects and stay away from open water bodies.

Local disaster management units have been alerted to monitor and respond to potential flash flooding and infrastructure issues.

Farmers and outdoor workers are advised to protect themselves from heavy rains and plan activities accordingly.

Monsoon Progress and Meteorological Context

This period marks the peak of the monsoon in northern India, contributing to the pattern of frequent wet spells interspersed with sunny intervals.

The south-west monsoon currents currently active over the region have intensified due to a cyclonic circulation over adjoining areas, reinforcing the likelihood of the heavy rains.

Rivers and reservoirs in the NCR are anticipated to benefit from the rainfall, which will also aid in alleviating heat and moderating air quality affected by dust and pollution.

Conclusion

As heavy rains and thunderstorms loom over Delhi on Saturday, the IMD’s forecast signals a classic monsoon pattern for the city marked by fluctuating weather and intense rain events. Preparedness and vigilance are key to navigating this spell safely. The weekend promises to be dynamic, moving from warmth to wetness, before stabilizing early next week.
