Elon Musk: ‘I Have Never…’ Quips After SpaceX Engineer Quazi Quits the Cosmic Crew

The tech and innovation world is buzzing as Kairan Quazi, the 16-year-old engineering prodigy who joined SpaceX at just 14, has announced his resignation from the company and a new chapter at Citadel Securities, one of Wall Street’s premier trading firms. Elon Musk’s terse public reaction—claiming to have “never heard of him”—sparked debate, but the broader story highlights a trailblazing journey that has already made Kairan a global inspiration.

Key Highlights: Kairan Quazi’s Departure and Musk’s Response

Kairan Quazi made headlines in 2023 as the youngest-ever software engineer at SpaceX, working on the Starlink project and contributing to critical satellite internet functions.

After two years at the cutting edge of aerospace, Quazi opted for a new challenge in quantitative finance, joining Citadel Securities as a global trading infrastructure engineer.

When asked about Quazi’s exit, Elon Musk posted on X (formerly Twitter), “First time I’ve ever heard of him,” surprising many, given Quazi’s viral fame and historic status within SpaceX.

The move to Wall Street was driven by Quazi’s desire for faster feedback cycles and measurable impact—a contrast to the sometimes years-long development timelines in aerospace.

Kairan Quazi: Prodigy’s Early Achievements and Rise to Fame

A Bangladeshi-American, Quazi finished community college by 10, interned at Intel Labs, and became the youngest graduate in Santa Clara University’s 170-year history at age 14.

His unique path—from university prodigy to one of SpaceX’s most visible young talents—sparked international discussion about the value of youth, meritocracy, and gatekeeping in high-tech industries.

At SpaceX, Quazi's work focused on improving Starlink’s satellite accuracy and reliability, making a real-world impact on global connectivity efforts even as a teenager.

He was no stranger to controversy, calling out tech industry age restrictions—most notably when LinkedIn restricted his account for being under 16.

Why Quazi Left SpaceX for Citadel Securities

Quazi stated that, while aerospace projects are intellectually demanding, quant finance offers complexity with faster results—weeks or days instead of months or years.

He chose Citadel for its “meritocratic and high-impact” environment, emphasizing how quantitative finance roles are now magnets for top math and engineering talent.

At Citadel Securities, he’ll build global trading infrastructure and work alongside some of the world’s brightest minds in a field where impact is quickly measurable and rewarded.

Industry and Social Reaction

Musk’s apparent unfamiliarity with Quazi was met with skepticism and surprise among SpaceX watchers, many of whom followed the prodigy’s remarkable career milestones closely.

The episode reignited debates about recognition in massive tech organizations: the ease with which individual contributions can fly under the radar, particularly at visionary companies led by larger-than-life figures such as Musk.

Meanwhile, Quazi’s decision has been widely praised for exemplifying intellectual curiosity and courage—moving beyond fame or comfort zones to seek new frontiers.

Conclusion

Kairan Quazi leaves SpaceX having already achieved more than most do in a lifetime, his story intersecting questions of age, innovation, and the cultures of tomorrow’s industries. While Elon Musk’s remarks may reflect his detached oversight in a sprawling company, the lasting image is of a teenager determined to chase complexity, impact, and discovery—unfazed by convention, ready for the next extraordinary leap.
