At the Startup Mahakumbh conference held in New Delhi today, Ansuman Pattnaik, Director General of the Competition Commission of India (CCI), was concerned about the challenges facing Indian startups to compete with global tech giants like Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, and NVIDIA. Speaking at the panel titled Regulatory Landscape for Startups: Balancing Compliance and Growth, Pattnaik highlighted how these giants leverage their massive resources and control over data to curb the growth of potential startups.
Pattnaik highlighted some of the key issues such as platform neutrality, anti-steering, and self-referring wherein the big technology companies favor their own offerings over startups. He also highlighted instances of price fixing and restricted market access resulting in difficulties for startups to compete on an even keel. "Startups sometimes find it difficult to grow in the face of such giants," he added further.
CCI official promised start-up entrepreneurs that the commission is taking steps towards redressing such grievances through market correction and penalties. He pointed towards recent orders imposed on Google and Meta as examples where regulation measures have created a level playing field. Pattnaik urged start-ups to approach the commission with grievances in case of unfair trade practices.
The debate emphasized the need for strong competition policies to promote innovation and ensure equal growth prospects for domestic startups in India's new digital economy.
