Key Highlights

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has launched a landmark four-volume Heritage Handbook Series, designed to help residents and tourists explore the diverse historical, architectural, and cultural landmarks across the MMR.

Curated by the People Place Project (PPP) and supported by the MMR Heritage Conservation Society (MMR-HCS), the series was unveiled in MMRDA’s Golden Jubilee Year by Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee and a team of historians, architects, and urban researchers.

Structure and Scope of the Handbook Series

Each volume features a carefully curated list of heritage sites, easy-to-read maps, walking trails, and contextual narratives, serving as practical companions for heritage walks or virtual exploration.

The handbook covers four distinct precincts:

Kalyan-Thane: Featuring ancient settlements and historical transit routes.
Vasai-Sopara-Virar: Highlighting maritime trade and fort traditions.
Mumbadevi-Dongri: Capturing vibrant community life and legendary temples.
Mumbai Suburbs (Bandra and the western coastal belt): Showcasing layered urban histories and scenic village trails.

Reviving Public Memory and Cultural Appreciation

These volumes aim to revive awareness of forgotten or lesser-known sites, linking contemporary neighborhoods with their storied pasts.

Each guide book—created by expert researchers including Minaz Ansari, Het Shah, Pascal Lopes, Manasi Chokshi, and others—integrates interviews, experiential walking instructions, and local insights.

Readers find not just heritage site locations but also recommendations on how to explore them: where to turn at a crossroads, which landmark to seek out next, and the personal stories connected to each place.

User-Focused Design and Accessibility

The companion format ensures both locals and visitors can physically tour the region or enjoy an armchair exploration of its history.

The narrative style is experiential, using step-by-step guidance and personal vignettes to make places accessible, even to those unable to travel.

Maps are designed for clarity and utility, allowing readers to follow suggested routes and deepen their understanding of historical context along the way.

Impact on Heritage Conservation and Urban Identity

With the MMR rapidly expanding and historically significant sites increasingly at risk, the handbook is part of a larger effort to reshape public perceptions of heritage.

By encouraging community participation and stewardship, the series serves as a tool for raising awareness and preserving shared legacy, especially in the face of urban growth.

Officials and contributors hope future companion books will extend coverage to additional neighborhoods and strengthen appreciation for Mumbai’s multifaceted culture.

Conclusion

The newly launched Heritage Handbook Series offers MMR residents and visitors a novel, engaging way to discover the region’s layered history. Through immersive guidance, personal stories, and easy access to information, the series promises to inspire renewed connections to Mumbai’s evolving cultural landscape.
