Flying Soon? Here’s How Rain In Mumbai And Delhi Could Affect Your Flight Plans

Swarnadwip Nath Published Aug 25, 2025, 12:25 PM Updated Sep 18, 2026, 01:50 AM

The soaring monsoon rains in Mumbai and Delhi have led to significant disruptions, prompting airlines such as IndiGo and Akasa Air to issue travel advisories urging passengers to plan ahead and expect delays. With heavy waterlogging, slow traffic on airport routes, and flight operation challenges...

Key Highlights From The Travel Advisory

IndiGo and Akasa Air have alerted passengers flying out of Mumbai and Delhi about severe weather impacting airport commutes and flight schedules.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, and surrounding regions.

Heavy rain has caused widespread waterlogging on airport connectivity roads, leading to sluggish traffic and longer commute times for passengers.

Several flights experienced delays, with some being diverted or forced to abort landings temporarily due to poor visibility and challenging runway conditions.

Passengers are advised to check real-time flight statuses on airline websites or mobile apps before heading to airports.

Extra travel time is recommended to account for slow-moving traffic, possible road closures, and limited public transport availability.

Airlines have reassured customers that safety is the top priority and that teams are working round the clock to manage disruptions and support travelers.

Authorities are monitoring weather and traffic conditions continuously to restore normalcy at airports and surrounding roads as soon as possible.

Some local train and bus services have also been suspended or rerouted in Mumbai and Delhi due to heavy rainfall and flooding.

Power outages and emergency rescue operations continue in heavily affected suburban areas.

Understanding The Impact On Air Travel

While airports remain operational, adverse weather conditions have increased air traffic congestion. Low visibility during thunderstorms complicates flight approaches and departures, forcing air traffic control to space out flights and manage delays carefully.

Waterlogged access roads further add to passenger inconvenience, highlighting the need for meticulous trip planning especially during peak monsoon months.

Safety And Precautionary Measures For Travelers

Airlines strongly recommend travelers:

Regularly monitor official airline communications for updates.
Arrive well ahead of scheduled departure times.
Use reliable transport options familiar with alternate routes if available.
Follow airport and airline guidelines regarding luggage and boarding during disruptions.
Stay hydrated and prepared for waiting times in adverse weather.

Looking Ahead: Forecast And Travel Tips

The IMD forecasts that the heavy rainfall pattern will persist over the next few days with intermittent breaks. Travelers planning flights from Mumbai, Delhi, and other affected cities should remain cautious and flexible with plans.

To avoid last-minute hassles:

Book flexible tickets wherever possible.
Keep digital copies of tickets and ID proofs ready.
Stay connected with airline customer care for assistance.
Check ground transport alternatives to airports, including metro or app-based cabs.
Prepare for possible delays and pack essentials accordingly.

Conclusion

Heavy rains in Mumbai and Delhi have presented significant challenges for airline operations and passenger movement. The travel advisories issued by major carriers like IndiGo and Akasa Air underscore the importance of proactive planning and real-time information.

By staying informed and prepared, flyers can minimize disruptions and navigate this monsoon season’s travel hurdles more smoothly, ensuring safer and more comfortable journeys despite the weather.
