Veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan, a stalwart of Indian cinema with a prolific career spanning over four decades, has announced his plans to retire from the film industry after completing his 100th directorial project. Speaking candidly on the sets of his upcoming Hindi thriller “Haiwaan,” Priyadarshan expressed that he is “getting tired” and intends to conclude his illustrious journey with a slate of significant films, including the highly anticipated “Hera Pheri 3” and a special 100th film starring his longtime collaborator Mohanlal.

Key Highlights: A Career at the Crossroads

Priyadarshan is currently shooting “Haiwaan” in Kochi, a remake of his critically acclaimed 2016 Malayalam film “Oppam,” featuring Bollywood stars Saif Ali Khan and Akshay Kumar in lead roles, with Shriya Pilgaonkar and Saiyami Kher in pivotal parts.

The director revealed that the Malayalam superstar Mohanlal will make a surprise cameo appearance in “Haiwaan,” a nod to their enduring friendship and professional partnership that dates back to 1984.

After “Haiwaan,” Priyadarshan plans to helm his 100th film with Mohanlal in the leading role, a milestone project slated to begin shooting next year.

Despite his general reluctance to revisit earlier works with sequels, Priyadarshan confirmed that he will direct “Hera Pheri 3,” prompted by persistent producer requests and the franchise’s enormous fan following.

Priyadarshan’s candid admission of fatigue speaks to the intensive demands of filmmaking and a long career marked by numerous blockbuster comedies and dramas, including classics like “Hera Pheri,” “Hungama,” and “Bhool Bhulaiyaa.”

The Unfolding of “Haiwaan” and Nostalgic Connections

“Haiwaan” is being produced by KVN Productions and Thespian Films on a large budget, blending suspense, action, and thriller elements.

The current schedule includes iconic Kochi locations where the original “Oppam” had memorable sequences, signifying a nostalgic full circle for the director.

The story revolves around dark and gripping themes, with Akshay Kumar reportedly essaying an antagonist role, adding intrigue and suspense to the project.

Priyadarshan’s collaboration with both Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan marks a reunion of some of Bollywood’s most talented performers in a film expected to capture audience imagination.

The 100th Film: A Dream Project with Mohanlal

Mohanlal, a childhood friend and long-term collaborator, has been an integral part of Priyadarshan’s filmography from his directorial debut “Poochakkoru Mookkuthi” (1984).

The upcoming 100th film aims to be a landmark project celebrating their creative synergy.

Though the screenplay is still in development, expectations are high given the team’s history of producing critically acclaimed and commercially successful cinema.

Future and Farewell

Priyadarshan’s retirement marks the closing of a significant chapter in Indian cinema, as he plans to bow out on a high note.

His legacy includes a remarkable blend of comedy, thriller, drama, and innovation across both Malayalam and Hindi films.

The director’s upcoming releases promise to be a fitting farewell, continuing to entertain and engage audiences worldwide.

Conclusion

As Priyadarshan steps into the sunset after completing a monumental 100-film journey, his announcement reflects the weight of decades devoted to storytelling, craft, and cinema. With “Haiwaan,” “Hera Pheri 3,” and the centennial film on the horizon, fans and cinephiles are poised for a memorable farewell to one of the most versatile filmmakers in the Indian film fraternity.
