In the golden era of Bollywood during the late 1970s, the legendary actors Vinod Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan were among the biggest stars, often sharing screen space and occasionally competing for lead roles. A lesser-known but fascinating episode from that period revolves around the 1977 film "Khoon Pasina," where Vinod Khanna stepped down from the lead role to make way for Amitabh Bachchan but reportedly received the same remuneration as the main lead.

Key Highlights: The Shift in Lead Role for "Khoon Pasina"

"Khoon Pasina," released in 1977 and directed by Rakesh Kumar, was initially framed to be a Vinod Khanna-led project.

However, during pre-production, the decision was made for Amitabh Bachchan to assume the lead role, largely due to the rising popularity and box office pull of Bachchan at that time.

Despite stepping down to a significant supporting role, Vinod Khanna negotiated and was paid equally to the lead actor, reflecting his stature and importance in the film industry.

This arrangement was uncommon in the then Bollywood ecosystem, underscoring the respect and bargaining power Vinod Khanna commanded among filmmakers.

Impact on Other Cast Members and the Film’s Dynamics

The reshuffling caused a ripple effect on other cast members, notably actor Danny Denzongpa, who was reportedly ousted from the project to accommodate the new lineup favoring Amitabh Bachchan.

The film’s dynamics shifted to highlight Bachchan’s brooding, intense screen presence, aligning with his emerging image as the "Angry Young Man."

Vinod Khanna’s graceful acceptance of the change demonstrated professionalism and contributed to the film’s eventual success.

Context: Rivalry or Respect?

While media and public often speculated about rivalry between the two stars, multiple sources later emphasized a foundation of mutual respect and friendship beneath professional competition.

Vinod Khanna himself acknowledged in interviews that the supposed rivalry was largely a media creation, and the actors supported each other’s careers.

Their collaboration in numerous films like "Muqaddar Ka Sikandar," "Parvarish," and "Amar Akbar Anthony" are remembered as epitomes of cinematic camaraderie.

Legacy of "Khoon Pasina" and Influence on Bollywood

"Khoon Pasina" was commercially successful and contributed to cementing Amitabh Bachchan’s status as a top star.

The film also highlighted Vinod Khanna’s versatility and willingness to be team-oriented.

This episode reflected evolving trends in Bollywood during that era, where star power increasingly influenced casting and billing decisions.

Conclusion

The story of Vinod Khanna stepping down as lead for Amitabh Bachchan in "Khoon Pasina," yet earning the same pay, reveals much about the dynamics of Bollywood’s superstar culture in the 1970s. It was a blend of respect, strategy, and mutual understanding shaping careers and iconic films. This moment of collaboration amid competition is a testament to how legends navigate professional challenges while leaving enduring legacies for generations to admire.
