In a continent known for its entrepreneurial grit and economic transformation, one name stands out as a symbol of power, prestige, and prosperity—Prateek Suri. Once a struggling electronics trader in India, Suri is now the richest Indian in Africa, having built a billion-dollar empire that spans consumer electronics, infrastructure, and luxury real estate. His journey, chronicled in a recent feature by The Standard, is a masterclass in resilience, vision, and global ambition.

Key Highlights

Prateek Suri is the founder of Maser Group, Africa’s seventh unicorn with over one billion dollars in revenue

His flagship brand, Maser, dominates the consumer electronics market across Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa

Suri owns multiple luxury mansions, a fleet of yachts, and a private island off the West African coast

Through MDR Investments, he manages a $500 million venture fund focused on infrastructure, AI, logistics, and mining

His philanthropic work includes building schools, clinics, and clean water systems across underserved African communities

The Genesis of Maser: From Dubai to Lagos

Suri’s journey began with a setback. Unable to sell his LED TVs in India, he shipped the unsold inventory to Dubai, hoping to salvage his losses. That gamble turned into a breakthrough when Dubai-based re-exporters introduced his products to African markets. The affordable yet high-quality TVs quickly gained traction, especially in informal retail channels.

Maser’s smart TVs became household staples across West Africa

The brand’s success was driven by local market understanding and supply chain agility

By 2024, Maser had sold over 800,000 units and achieved unicorn status

This rapid ascent positioned Suri as a dominant force in Africa’s consumer tech landscape.

Building an Empire: Real Estate, Yachts, and a Private Island

Suri’s success isn’t confined to electronics. His lifestyle mirrors his business scale—opulent, expansive, and deeply rooted in African soil.

He owns multiple golf-course mansions in Lagos, Nigeria

His luxury yachts are anchored in elite marinas across the continent

His crown jewel is a private island in the Western African Sea, set to become a luxury eco-retreat and smart community

Plans for the island include high-end resorts, tech-integrated living spaces, and sustainable tourism infrastructure, blending leisure with innovation.

MDR Investments: Powering Africa’s Next Leap

Beyond consumer goods, Suri is shaping Africa’s future through MDR Investments, a venture capital arm of Maser Group.

The fund backs high-growth sectors including infrastructure, shipping, AI, cloud data centers, and mining

Suri’s strategic focus is on scalable, impact-driven projects that create jobs and modernize economies

His investments are helping build roads, ports, and digital ecosystems across emerging African markets

This approach positions him not just as a businessman, but as a nation-builder.

Philanthropy with Purpose

Despite his wealth, Suri remains grounded in his roots. His philanthropic efforts span education, healthcare, and clean water access.

He funds tech education programs for African youth

His foundation builds schools and clinics in rural communities

He is known for hands-on involvement, often visiting project sites personally

This blend of capital and compassion has earned him admiration far beyond boardrooms.

Conclusion: A Bridge Between Continents

His story is not just about wealth, but about vision, impact, and the power of second chances.
