From Screen to Screech: Mukesh Khanna Opposes Ranveer’s Superhero Stint Again

The veteran actor Mukesh Khanna, known for his iconic portrayal of Shaktimaan in the 1990s, has once again publicly opposed the casting of Bollywood star Ranveer Singh as the legendary superhero in the upcoming cinematic adaptation. Khanna’s firm stance comes from his deep personal association with the character and a protective attitude toward preserving Shaktimaan’s legacy—emphasizing that casting is not just about acting talent but about embodying the role in real life as well.

Key Highlights of Mukesh Khanna’s Opposition

Mukesh Khanna clarified that while he respects Ranveer Singh as an actor and human being, he never approved him as the face of Shaktimaan.

He recounted a three-hour meeting with Ranveer Singh where the latter passionately expressed his interest in the role, but Khanna remained unconvinced of his suitability due to differing images.

Khanna stressed the irreversibility of changing Shaktimaan’s values or persona, saying, “You can’t show Raavan in the role of Raam,” underscoring his vision for the character’s integrity.

He bluntly addressed fan pressure and rumors, stating he has no plans to step aside or let anyone else become Shaktimaan because, in his view, he already is the original and only Shaktimaan.

The veteran actor suggested Ranveer Singh might be better suited for the antagonist role of Tamraj Kilvish, citing his “mischievous positivity” contrasting with the gravitas required for Shaktimaan.

Mukesh emphasized that casting should consider an actor’s real-life image because public perception heavily influences the credibility of a superhero.

The continued debate has led Khanna to warn that he might pursue legal options if the rights and portrayal of Shaktimaan deviate from his established legacy.

He reiterated that his role in shaping Shaktimaan’s ethos extends beyond acting, underlining his ownership of the character’s intellectual property and the responsibility it entails.

Background and Ongoing Controversy

The original Shaktimaan aired on Doordarshan from 1997 to 2005, gaining cult status with over 450 episodes. Mukesh Khanna’s portrayal became synonymous with the superhero’s moral code and cultural impact.

The proposed revival in the form of a film trilogy by Sony Pictures sparked wide excitement, but the casting process has ignited controversies. Reports tying Ranveer Singh, a popular Bollywood star known for his energetic style, to the lead sparked mixed reactions. While producers and some industry insiders confirm Singh’s involvement, Khanna’s public dissent represents a significant hurdle.

Industry Responses and Public Reaction

While director Basil Joseph has staunchly backed Ranveer Singh as Shaktimaan, dismissing replacement rumors, the actor himself remains committed to the project. Meanwhile, fans remain divided: some lament the loss of the original actor’s seal of authenticity, while others look forward to a fresh take.

Khanna’s comments, including his candid words describing spokespersons cautioning him against casting Singh as “nashedi” (addict) in character, have added fuel to the debate. The ongoing friction highlights challenges in rebooting beloved legacy characters where both cultural nostalgia and modern cinematic expectations collide.

What Lies Ahead for Shaktimaan?

As this dispute unfolds, the future of the Shaktimaan franchise remains uncertain. Legal battles may arise over creative control and casting decisions. Moreover, the project faces the delicate task of balancing reverence for a cultural icon with evolving audience desires.

For now, Mukesh Khanna continues to embody the spirit of the original Shaktimaan, affirming he will fiercely safeguard the character’s authenticity—poised to act should the cinematic direction stray from the revered legend.
