From Shop Local to Think Global: Modi Urges Swadeshi as Everyone’s Mantra

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called upon every Indian to adopt “swadeshi” (locally made) as a fundamental life principle, reinforcing his government’s flagship “Make in India” initiative. Speaking at the inauguration of Maruti Suzuki’s first electric vehicle and battery cell factory in Hansalpur, Gujarat, Modi emphasized that the sweat and hard work behind a product matters more than the currency it is invested in. His remarks came amid global economic challenges and increasing calls for boosting domestic manufacturing and innovation.

Key Highlights: Swadeshi As a Core National Ethos

Modi highlighted the transformative impact of “Make in India” policies, citing dramatic growth in electronics production (500%), mobile device manufacturing (2,700%), and defense manufacturing (200%) over the last decade.

He emphasized that all products made in India—regardless of investment origin—are swadeshi if they involve Indian effort, underlining Maruti Suzuki’s status as a proud swadeshi brand even as it benefits from global partnerships.

Modi urged citizens to promote swadeshi goods by displaying signage at shops and consciously choosing indigenous products during major festivals like Navratri, Diwali, and Vijayadashami.

The PM announced new employment opportunities through the “Prime Minister Viksit Bharat Employment Scheme” targeting youth across multiple emerging sectors.

Economic Resilience Amid Global Challenges

Against the backdrop of rising tariffs and trade tensions, notably a 50% U.S. tariff looming on Indian imports, Modi stressed India’s resolve to uphold the interests of farmers, craftsmen, shopkeepers, and entrepreneurs.

He conveyed confidence that India’s strengths—including democracy, demographic advantage, and a large skilled workforce—position the nation for resilient growth and global competitiveness.

India’s policy framework continues to promote innovation, ease of doing business, and strategic sector development, including semiconductors, clean energy, and defense tech.

Green Mobility and Technological Progress

Modi flagged the launch of Maruti Suzuki’s e-Vitara electric vehicle and a local Li-ion battery plant— India’s first production collaboration involving three Japanese firms, symbolizing a green technology milestone.

He advocated accelerating investment in electric vehicle infrastructure and local battery manufacturing as critical to strengthening India’s energy independence and climate action goals.

Cultural and Social Impact

Modi linked swadeshi to cultural pride and economic sovereignty, framing self-reliance as not only a practical necessity but a patriotic duty.

His narrative ties historical figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Lord Krishna with modern India’s growth story, blending tradition with futuristic ambition.

The PM reiterated government commitment to social equity, encouraging women’s participation in startups, sports, and innovation ecosystems.

Forward-Looking Reforms and Vision

The government is advancing “next-generation” reforms in taxation (GST 2.0), labor, and industrial policy, creating a nurturing environment for MSMEs, startups, and large enterprises alike.

Modi invites all stakeholders to join the nation-building journey toward “Viksit Bharat” by 2047, envisioning India as a prosperous, globally respected economic powerhouse.

His message resounds with a call to embrace swadeshi confidently—not out of compulsion, but as a proud example for the world.

Conclusion: Embracing Swadeshi for India’s Future

PM Narendra Modi’s appeal to make swadeshi life’s mantra embodies India’s renewed focus on self-reliance rooted in quality, innovation, and inclusive growth. By intertwining economic policy with cultural ethos, Modi charts a path for India’s citizens and businesses to contribute to a resilient and prosperous future. Supporting indigenous products and fostering homegrown industries is portrayed as a collective duty to uplift the nation and inspire generations ahead.
