From Solo Dream to Ecosystem Reality: Dr. Prativa Pandey Redefines Entrepreneurship in Nepal

Swarnadwip Nath Published Jul 31, 2025, 11:13 PM Updated Sep 17, 2026, 07:00 PM

Nepal’s entrepreneurial landscape witnessed a vibrant and thought-provoking exchange this week at the second Nepal Entrepreneurship Forum, where Dr. Prativa Pandey, founder and CEO of Herveda Botanicals, delivered a compelling keynote. Her message—entrepreneurship thrives not in isolation, but through robust ecosystems rooted in trust, innovation, and collaboration—resonated across business, academic, and policymaking circles.

Introduction

Addressing a packed hall in Kathmandu on July 26, Dr. Pandey challenged the prevailing myth of the lone entrepreneur, instead describing a dynamic reality where success hinges on collective support, adaptive partnerships, and an unwavering commitment to sustainable growth. Her personal journey and practical reflections illuminated real-time shifts and persistent challenges in Nepal’s fast-evolving business environment.

Key Highlights from the Forum

Dr. Pandey’s speech drew from both her accomplishments at Herveda Botanicals and her rigorous scientific background to map the landscape for Nepalese entrepreneurs:
Entrepreneurs must move beyond the solitary mindset. The success of any venture is tethered to the vitality of its ecosystem—including suppliers, regulators, communities, and the broader environment.
Reflecting on her return to Nepal in 2015, she detailed the hurdles faced as a female scientist launching a purpose-driven enterprise amid structural value-chain gaps, regulatory flux, and rural skill shortages. Innovation, she argued, is most impactful when grounded in context-specific challenges, never in a vacuum.
She spotlighted the importance of building trust in Nepal’s fragile entrepreneurial environment. Real change, said Dr. Pandey, is anchored in relationships, shared learning, and enduring commitment—not just formal contracts.
Growth readiness should eclipse the urge for rapid scale. With Herveda’s expansion—including its commitment to engaging hundreds of local farmers—she underscored that mental, structural, and preparation for scaling is a gradual, holistic process, tested far beyond academic credentials.

Principles for Sustainable Entrepreneurial Growth

Dr. Pandey’s address revolved around three core tenets for the next generation of enterprises:

Value the Ecosystem: Growth and resilience depend on nurturing collaborative relationships and embracing responsible, sustainable practices embedded in the local context.

Build Trust: In systems as sensitive as Nepal’s, trust is fundamental. Fostering credibility with stakeholders—from rural partners to consumers—is essential for stability and long-term success.

Be Growth-Ready: Expansion demands both strategic and psychological preparedness, not just operational capacity. Dr. Pandey’s experience evolving Herveda Botanicals, fueled by in-depth research and community engagement, exemplifies this principle in action.

Government Vision: Policy and the Green Imperative

The forum also featured a message from Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Damodar Bhandari, who reinforced the importance of inclusive growth, innovation, and sustainability:

The government is targeting policy stability—streamlining registration, improving capital access, and offering potential incentives for eco-friendly businesses.

There is a concerted push toward a circular economy, with special recognition for enterprises leveraging Nepal’s rich biodiversity in sustainable ways (as with Herveda Botanicals).

New legislative frameworks, including the National Startup Enterprise Policy and Startup Enterprise Loan Operating Procedure, are in the pipeline to boost innovation and responsible entrepreneurship.

The Minister warned against the concentration of entrepreneurial gains, advocating for greater involvement of women, marginalized communities, and youth—tied closely to fair labor standards and shared prosperity.

Herveda Botanicals: Award-Winning Model for Purpose-Driven Business

Herveda Botanicals, launched by Dr. Pandey in 2019, stands as a living example of her philosophy. The brand fuses Himalayan herbal wealth with cutting-edge scientific innovation, producing premium natural skincare and wellness products. Its operational model is grounded in R&D, indigenous knowledge, and community partnership—addressing critical industry gaps such as underutilized medicinal plants, regulatory gaps, and ethical production.

The Path Forward

Dr. Prativa Pandey’s keynote did not merely issue a call for collaboration and trust; it embodied these values in practice. As Nepal’s businesses, policymakers, and changemakers reflect on the forum’s insights, the message is clear: building a strong, sustainable future requires ecosystem thinking and a collective approach to growth.
