From Trash To Tech: India‑EU Coalition Revs Up EV Battery Recycling Revolution

Swarnadwip Nath Published May 05, 2026, 10:25 PM Updated Sep 17, 2026, 07:44 PM

India and the European Union have teamed up with a 15.2 million euro initiative to accelerate start‑up collaboration and innovation in electric vehicle battery recycling, aiming to build a resilient circular‑economy backbone for the global EV sector. This flagship partnership under the India‑EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC) will connect Indian and European SMEs and solution‑driven startups to co‑develop advanced recycling technologies and safer, more sustainable supply chains.

India‑EU EV Battery Recycling Drive Launched

The governments of India and the European Union have formally launched a joint 15.2 million euro initiative focused squarely on EV battery recycling, timed with growing demand for electric vehicles and tightening environmental regulations on e‑waste. The programme is structured around matchmaking events and technology‑transfer platforms that will help Indian and EU startups in the clean‑tech and battery‑recycling space forge business partnerships, pilot projects, and joint ventures.

Strategic Framework Under India‑EU TTC

The initiative operates under the India‑EU Trade and Technology Council, a high‑level framework set up in 2022 to deepen cooperation on digital, green, and emerging technologies. Within this framework, the new EV battery‑recycling drive falls under Working Group 2, which focuses on circular economy and sustainable industrial ecosystems. The collaboration signals both regions’ intent to align standards, share best practices, and jointly shape the global market for low‑impact battery production and disposal.

Start‑Up And SME Collaboration

A core component of the 15.2 million euro push is an Expression of Interest (EoI) inviting startups and SMEs engaged in battery‑recycling technologies for electric vehicles. Selected Indian and European firms will participate in dedicated matchmaking sessions, technical workshops, and investor‑industry roundtables to explore joint R&D projects, pilot recycling plants, and cross‑border commercialisation routes. The emphasis is on turning lab‑scale innovations into scalable, economically viable recycling systems that can handle the projected surge in retired EV batteries over the next decade.

Circular Economy And Carbon Neutrality Goals

The initiative explicitly ties EV battery recycling to India’s and the EU’s broader climate ambitions, including carbon‑neutrality targets and circular‑economy roadmaps. By recovering critical raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese from used batteries, the programme seeks to reduce dependence on virgin mining, lower lifecycle emissions, and strengthen supply‑chain security. The drive also supports regulatory preparedness for India’s emerging battery‑waste and extended‑producer‑responsibility (EPR) frameworks.
