The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has officially released the comprehensive information brochure for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026, setting the stage for one of India’s most esteemed engineering entrance examinations. Registration for the exam will begin on August 25, 2025, offering aspiring engineers and postgraduate candidates a detailed roadmap toward admission and career advancement.

Key Highlights: About GATE 2026 and Registration Process

GATE 2026 is scheduled to be conducted on February 7, 8, 14, and 15, 2026, across more than 200 cities in India, with no international test centers this year.

The exam will be held in two sessions each day: morning (9:30 am to 12:30 pm) and afternoon (2:30 pm to 5:30 pm).

The online registration window opens on August 25 and closes on September 25, 2025, with an extended deadline for late registrations until October 6, 2025, accompanied by additional fees.

Eligible candidates must hold or be in the third year of undergraduate programs in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts, Humanities, or have completed government-recognized degrees.

New Additions and Exam Pattern

GATE 2026 introduces a new paper titled Energy Science (XE-I) under the Engineering Sciences category, bringing the total number of papers to 30.

The examination includes a General Aptitude section (15 marks) common to all papers, with subject-specific questions totaling 85 marks.

Question types include Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) with negative marking, Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) without negative marking, and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.

The exam duration is three hours, with an extended four hours allowed for differently-abled candidates requiring scribes.

Syllabus and Preparation Outlook

The syllabus covers core subjects depending on the chosen paper, accompanied by compulsory sections such as Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude.

IIT Guwahati’s brochure provides a detailed breakdown of topics, enabling candidates to strategically structure their studies.

Candidates are advised to download the brochure and carefully review important guidelines, including document checklists and examination city details.

Why GATE 2026 Matters

GATE serves as a gateway to postgraduate admissions (MTech, ME, PhD) at prestigious institutions including IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other reputed universities.

The score is also pivotal for recruitment in various Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and research organizations.

IIT Guwahati’s administration assures a transparent, efficient, and technologically robust examination process aimed at fair assessment and candidate convenience.

Counseling and Result Timeline

The GATE 2026 results are expected to be announced mid-March 2026, with scorecards valid for three years.

Following results, a centralized counseling process will begin for admissions into participating institutions.

Timely completion of registration and document verification is essential to avoid glitches in the admission process.

Additional Information

The brochure includes extensive FAQs and helpline details for candidate queries.

IIT Guwahati emphasizes the importance of using only the official GATE website (gate2026.iitg.ac.in) for registrations and information updates.

Candidates are advised to avoid fraud and unverified third-party assistance.

Conclusion

The release of GATE 2026 information brochure by IIT Guwahati marks the official start of preparations for a crucial examination in the Indian academic calendar. With new papers, an extensive syllabus, and a rigorous but candidate-friendly registration process, GATE continues to be a benchmark for talented engineering aspirants seeking advanced education and career opportunities.
