Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal made a massive push for India's deeptech startups, with a significant portion of the ₹10,000 crore Fund of Funds (FoF) being allocated to this space. Speaking at the Startup Mahakumbh 2025, Goyal emphasized the need to build innovation in frontier technologies like AI, quantum computing, robotics, and biotech. The fund will assist in mobilizing "patient capital" for research-led startups and support early-stage innovation.
The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) will allow funds to be released with a priority on small startups and the establishment of state-level centers to aid entrepreneurs. Goyal also launched a dedicated helpline under Startup India for regulatory support and feedback.
The move follows a clamor for a shift from consumer-facing startups to high-tech segments. Although there were those who were complimentary of the move, others debated its relevance to India's startup landscape. Goyal remained upbeat on India emerging as a global leader in deep technology innovation.
