Remona Evette Pereira, a 20-year-old final-year BA student from St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru, has created history by performing Bharatanatyam continuously for an astounding 170 hours over seven days, officially recognized by the Golden Book of World Records.

Her marathon performance, held at the university’s Robert Sequeira Hall, took place from 10 AM on July 21 to 12 noon on July 28, 2025, surpassing the previous record of 127 hours by an impressive 43 hours.

Remona’s achievement is hailed as the first-ever continuous Bharatanatyam dance of such unprecedented duration, captivating audiences, officials, and cultural connoisseurs alike.

A Gripping Marathon of Classical Dance

Bharatanatyam is one of India’s oldest classical dance forms, known for its intricate footwork, precise hand gestures (mudras), expressive facial emotions, and rhythmic complexity. Performing it continuously for more than a week demands extraordinary stamina, concentration, and passion.

Remona began her marathon with prayers to Lord Ganesha and concluded with a devotional ballet dedicated to Goddess Durga, weaving spirituality and artistry into her unprecedented feat.

Despite the grueling duration, she was allowed only a 15-minute break every three hours, showcasing remarkable endurance and discipline as she maintained grace and intensity throughout.

The event attracted crowds including students, university faculty, local political leaders, art aficionados, and religious dignitaries, turning the venue into a vibrant hub of cultural celebration.

Personal Journey and Support System

Trained in Bharatanatyam since the age of three under Guru Shrividya Muralidhar, Remona’s dedication culminated in her rangapravesha (debut solo) in 2019.

Her mother, Gladis Celine, has been a steadfast inspiration and pillar of support throughout her journey.

The university’s Vice Chancellor, Jesuit Father Praveen Martis, praised Remona’s achievement as a tribute to India’s classical dance tradition and a source of immense pride for the community.

The certificate of excellence for this world record was awarded by Manish Vishnoi, Asia head of the Golden Book of World Records, who described Remona’s feat as “unimaginable” and “awe-inspiring.”

Community and Cultural Impact

The performance drew nationwide and even international attention, with videos of the event going viral on social media, inspiring millions with Remona’s energy and dedication.

Officials and cultural commentators lauded the record as a rejuvenation of classical arts and a testament to the evolving spirit of India’s cultural heritage in the 21st century.

The event encouraged a renewed appreciation for traditional art forms among youth and the general public alike, highlighting the relevance of Bharatanatyam in contemporary times.

Technical and Physical Challenges Overcome

Maintaining physical agility, breathing control, and mental alertness over 7 days with minimal respite posed monumental challenges.

The rigorous schedule demanded not only artistic excellence but also careful health monitoring and strategic pacing to sustain continuous performance.

Remona’s focused determination and training, combined with medical and logistical support from St Aloysius University, ensured she safely completed the marathon despite its intensity.

Significance and Legacy

This landmark achievement breaks all previous endurance records for Bharatanatyam, raising the bar for future performances both nationally and globally.

It reaffirms India's leadership in preserving and innovating classical dance traditions, positioning Remona as a role model for aspiring dancers.

The performance symbolically bridges spiritual devotion and physical artistry, enriching India’s cultural tapestry.

It also underscores the potential of young Indians to achieve global acclaim through dedication to their art and heritage.

Conclusion

Remona Evette Pereira’s historic 170-hour nonstop Bharatanatyam performance stands as a monumental milestone in the world of classical dance and endurance. Marking a harmonious blend of tradition, skill, and unwavering passion, her feat has etched a new chapter in India’s cultural chronicles. Recognized globally by the Golden Book of World Records, Remona’s journey inspires not only the artistic community but all who admire resilience and excellence.
