In a story that blends grit, sacrifice, and raw talent, 22-year-old Vaishnavi Patil from Kalyan, Maharashtra, has earned her place in India’s national wrestling team for the upcoming World Championships in Zagreb. The daughter of a dhaba owner, Vaishnavi’s journey from local mud wrestling pits to international mats is nothing short of extraordinary. Her recent victory at the national selection trials in the women’s 65kg category has not only secured her spot at the Worlds but also reignited hopes of an Olympic medal for India.

Key Highlights from the Selection Trials

Vaishnavi defeated Muskan 7-2 in the final bout, showcasing exceptional speed and mat awareness.

She has only four years of experience in mat wrestling, having transitioned from mud wrestling in late 2020.

Her tactical acumen and solid defence impressed selectors, despite limited exposure to major tournaments.

Journey from Kalyan to Hisar

Early Life and Inspiration Vaishnavi began her athletic journey as a swimmer, winning two state-level medals. Her passion for wrestling ignited after watching Sakshi Malik win bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Family Support and Sacrifice Her father, Dilip Patil, runs a small dhaba near a village bus stop. All earnings from the eatery go into Vaishnavi’s training. Her mother initially stayed with her during her early days in Hisar to support her physically and emotionally.

Training in Hisar With limited wrestling academies in Maharashtra, Vaishnavi moved to Hisar to train under coach Jasbeer at the Sushil Kumar Akhada. Jasbeer credits her discipline and decision to stay full-time at the training centre as pivotal to her rapid progress.

Wrestling Style and Mentorship

Vaishnavi is known for her sharp counter-attacks and technical precision.

She idolizes American wrestler Helen Maroulis, a seven-time World Championship medallist and Olympic gold winner.

She regularly studies Maroulis’ bouts on YouTube to refine her technique and mental approach.

Challenges and Turning Points

Initially, Vaishnavi would return home every few months, disrupting her training rhythm. Coach Jasbeer convinced her family to let her stay in Hisar year-round.

Her father’s financial sacrifices have left the family with zero bank balance, relying on farming income to sustain household needs while channeling all dhaba earnings into her career.

What’s Next for Vaishnavi

World Championships in Zagreb Vaishnavi will represent India in the 65kg category next month, aiming to secure a podium finish and gain crucial international experience.

Olympic Dream Her long-term goal is to win an Olympic medal for India, a dream she’s been chasing since her teenage years.

National Recognition Her story is gaining traction across media platforms, inspiring young athletes and drawing attention to the need for grassroots support in Indian sports.

Conclusion

Vaishnavi Patil’s rise from a modest dhaba in Kalyan to the global wrestling stage is a testament to determination, family support, and the power of dreams. As she prepares for the World Championships, her journey serves as a beacon of hope for countless aspiring athletes across India. With her eyes set on the Olympics, Vaishnavi is not just chasing medals—she’s rewriting the narrative of Indian women in sports.
