Key Highlights

Kabir Khan commemorated 13 years since the release of ‘Ek Tha Tiger,’ his first directorial venture with Salman Khan, hailing the film as the ground zero of the YRF Spy Universe.
Released on August 15, 2012, ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ not only shattered box office records with its historic opening but became the spark that ignited a multi-film franchise for Yash Raj Films (YRF).
The film’s legacy is further cemented by the continued global success of the Tiger franchise, with its blend of high-octane action, gripping romance, and a strong sense of Indian storytelling on an international canvas.

Genesis of a Blockbuster: How ‘Tiger’ Started the Spyverse

Kabir Khan, taking a nostalgic trip down memory lane, shared heartfelt behind-the-scenes photos and reflections on social media about the transformative power of ‘Ek Tha Tiger’.

He described the film as “the first heartbeat” of a now-iconic spy universe, lauding Salman Khan’s portrayal of Tiger as the emotional core that continues to captivate audiences.

The movie’s premise—a RAW agent (Salman Khan) torn between duty and love for a rival ISI agent (Katrina Kaif)—became the template for the franchise’s blend of action and romance.

Pioneering a New Era for Hindi Cinema

Kabir credited producer Aditya Chopra for envisioning ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ as a genre-defining leap, demonstrating that Indian films could deliver scale, style, and substance on par with global cinema.

Unique among contemporary blockbusters, the film delivered stunning action sequences with minimal reliance on VFX, giving the action a memorable realness often cited by fans and critics alike.

With sequels ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ and ‘Tiger 3,’ and spin-offs like ‘War’ and ‘Pathaan,’ the YRF Spyverse has since expanded into one of Bollywood’s most successful and influential franchises.

First Collaboration with Salman Khan: A Creative Milestone

Kabir Khan called his debut partnership with Salman Khan a turning point in his career, highlighting their creative synergy despite on-set differences.

He shared his enduring pride in the Tiger films and credited Salman’s Tiger as the soul and “heartbeat” of the ongoing Spyverse storytelling.

The director’s social posts and interviews recall how their collaboration helped push the boundaries of genre, star power, and emotion in mainstream Indian cinema.

Legacy and Onward Journey

‘Ek Tha Tiger’ not only emerged as one of the highest-grossing films of 2012 but also paved the way for crossover hits and blockbuster story arcs spanning continents.

Today, as the YRF Spyverse welcomes new entries like ‘War 2,’ the Tiger legacy remains a benchmark for how Indian action films can combine mass appeal, international production values, and heartfelt emotion.

Kabir Khan’s reflections serve as both an anniversary tribute and a celebration of what creative risks can achieve in film history.
