In a sweeping announcement on National Space Day 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and ISRO unveiled India’s most ambitious space roadmap to date, setting the stage for a transformative era in deep space exploration. The plan includes the launch of India’s own space station by 2035, the Chandrayaan-4 Moon sample return mission, and the creation of a national astronaut pool to prepare the next generation of spacefarers. The announcement reflects India’s growing stature in global space science and its commitment to inspiring youth-led innovation.

India’s Space Station: Bharatiya Antariksh Station

ISRO will launch the first module of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS) by 2028, with full operational capability targeted for 2035
The station will support long-duration missions, scientific experiments, and international collaborations
BAS will be a modular orbital platform, designed to host Indian astronauts and potentially foreign crew under bilateral agreements

Chandrayaan-4 And Lunar Ambitions

Chandrayaan-4 will be India’s first Moon sample return mission, aiming to retrieve and study lunar soil from the south pole region
The mission is scheduled for launch before 2040 and will build on the success of Chandrayaan-3’s historic soft landing
ISRO also confirmed plans for a Venus Orbiter Mission, expanding India’s interplanetary exploration portfolio

Next Generation Launcher And Deep Space Goals

The government has approved the development of a Next Generation Launcher (NGL) capable of deploying heavier payloads into deep space
By 2040, India aims to land astronauts on the Moon and return them safely, placing its space program on par with leading global agencies
ISRO is investing in semi-cryogenic engines, electric propulsion systems, and autonomous docking technologies to support these missions

India’s Astronaut Pool: A Call To Youth

Prime Minister Modi announced the formation of India’s first astronaut pool, inviting young citizens to participate in the country’s space journey
The pool will serve as a talent pipeline for future crewed missions, including those to the BAS and lunar surface
Modi emphasized that beyond galaxies lies India’s horizon, and the youth must be ready to explore it with courage and curiosity

Tribute To Shubhanshu Shukla

Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who recently hoisted the Indian tricolour aboard the International Space Station, was honored during the event
Modi recalled his emotional meeting with Shukla, calling him a symbol of New India’s infinite dreams and fearless spirit
Shukla’s mission was part of a strategic collaboration with NASA’s Axiom-4 program, marking India’s return to human spaceflight after four decades

Innovation And Youth Engagement

Initiatives like the Indian Space Hackathon and Robotics Challenge were praised for nurturing scientific talent and promoting space-tech entrepreneurship
Modi encouraged students to pursue careers in space science, engineering, and astrophysics, highlighting the role of education in national progress
ISRO will expand outreach programs in schools and universities to build awareness and participation in upcoming missions

Conclusion

India’s space roadmap unveiled on National Space Day 2025 is not just a technical blueprint—it is a national vision rooted in ambition, innovation, and youth empowerment. With a space station on the horizon, lunar sample missions in development, and a new generation of astronauts being called to serve, India is preparing to lead in the next frontier of exploration. As Prime Minister Modi declared, the sky is not the limit—it is only the beginning.
