Swarnadwip Nath Published Aug 25, 2025, 09:55 AM Updated Sep 16, 2026, 12:07 PM

India has made remarkable progress in the global artificial intelligence (AI) landscape, securing the seventh position in the worldwide AI innovation race. This ranking reflects the country’s growing investments, talent development, and burgeoning innovation ecosystem, putting India firmly...

Key Highlights From The Global AI Innovation Ranking

India scored 24 points in the AI innovation index, placing it seventh behind major global players like the United States, China, the United Kingdom, Canada, Israel, and Germany.

With AI investments reaching approximately $11.1 billion in 2025, India surpasses notable economies such as France, South Korea, and Singapore in AI adoption and funding.

The country is rapidly expanding its AI capabilities across sectors including healthcare, finance, retail, and manufacturing, driven by cutting-edge research and enterprise solutions.

India's AI market is projected to grow exponentially from $21.65 billion in 2024 to $257.45 billion by 2035, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 25%.

A significant government push under the IndiaAI Mission has invested around Rs 10,300 crore (approximately $1.2 billion) in building AI infrastructure, including one of the world’s largest AI computing facilities.

India leads globally in AI skill penetration with a 263% growth in AI talent since 2016; nearly 93% of Indian organizations plan increased AI investments in 2025.

Indian startups and tech companies are developing indigenous AI models tailored for local needs, such as BharatGPT and Sarvam AI, underscoring innovation with homegrown expertise.

The geopolitical context favors India as a global AI hub, with companies like OpenAI expanding their operations in India, seeking to include India’s vast user base and skilled workforce.

The government is also fostering AI ethics and regulatory frameworks, focusing on responsible AI deployment and inclusive development.

India’s AI Ecosystem And Talent Pool

India has emerged as a potent incubator for AI innovation, with around 16% of the world’s AI talent concentrated in the country. It boasts over 520 technology incubators and accelerators, making it the third-largest startup ecosystem globally.

Training initiatives, such as national AI skilling centers, are rapidly enhancing the workforce's capabilities to meet industry demand, especially important as AI adoption grows in sectors beyond IT, including healthcare and agriculture.

The Role of Government Policy And Infrastructure

IndiaAI Mission, a flagship government program, is at the center of national efforts to build AI capacity. It focuses on creating affordable access to high-performance computing resources, releasing quality datasets for research, and nurturing innovation clusters.

Significant infrastructure investments, including over 18,600 GPU units in dedicated AI centers, highlight the scale of India’s commitment.

The AI Innovation Race In A Global Context

While the US and China lead the race, India’s climb to seventh place reflects an increasingly competitive landscape. These rankings emphasize the concentration of AI investments, with just a few countries dominating private R&D spending, yet India’s growing ecosystem signals shifting dynamics.

India’s position as an open, democratic hub contrasts with the tighter AI controls seen in nations like China, enhancing its appeal for global companies seeking innovation partnerships.

Challenges And Opportunities Ahead

Though India excels in AI talent and market growth, challenges remain. The country faces dependency on foreign hardware like GPUs, a shortage of deep-tech AI researchers, and uneven AI adoption in rural and smaller cities. Regulatory frameworks are evolving, but comprehensive AI laws are yet to be fully instituted.

Nonetheless, accelerating investments, policy focus on innovation, and expanding startup activity create opportunities for India to strengthen its AI leadership.

Conclusion

India’s seventh-place ranking in the global AI innovation race is a testament to its dynamic ecosystem, robust government support, and growing tech talent pool. With projections of a multi-fold increase in market size over the next decade, India is well positioned to become a significant AI powerhouse, contributing to economic growth and technological advancement on the world stage.
