Western Disturbances And Rainfall
There have been western disturbances bringing clouds, thunderstorms and rain to northern India. This has stopped the heat from building up and kept the temperatures lower than usual. Moisture from the Bay of Bengal has also helped to cool the plains.
El Niño’s Role
The IMD notes that El Niño conditions are changing and could become strong. This usually means temperatures globally but in India its causing unusual rainfall in May. The agency thinks rainfall could be 110% of the amount which might delay the peak summer heat.
Regional Contrasts
With the cooler trend southern states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Telangana are still really hot with temperatures above 40°C. Some areas in the northeast and northwest might also be warmer than usual.
