L&T Semiconductor Technologies (LTSCT), a fabless chip startup backed by the engineering giant Larsen & Toubro, has unveiled ambitious plans to establish a $10 billion wafer fabrication facility in India by 2027. This initiative is a significant step in India's journey to becoming a global semiconductor hub, aligning with the government's $10 billion incentive program to boost the domestic chip industry.
Founded in 2023, LTSCT specializes in designing semiconductor components such as MEMS sensors, analog and mixed-signal ICs, RF chips, and smart power devices. The company aims to transition from a fabless designer to an integrated device manufacturer (IDM), contingent on achieving $1 billion in annual revenue by the 2026–2027 fiscal year.
Key highlights of the announcement include:
- The proposed fab will require an investment of over $10 billion, with the Indian government expected to contribute up to 90% of the cost.
- LTSCT plans to develop 15 chip products by 2027, leveraging its $300 million funding from Larsen & Toubro.
- The facility is expected to cater to the growing demand for semiconductors, driven by advancements in AI, IoT, and automotive technologies.
This bold move underscores India's commitment to strengthening its semiconductor ecosystem and reducing reliance on imports, paving the way for technological self-reliance.
