India’s Sporting Future Gets A Startup Boost With PM’s New Policy Push

In the 124th edition of his monthly radio address Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a major policy shift aimed at transforming India into a global sporting superpower. The newly launched Khelo Bharat Niti 2025 will not only integrate sports into everyday life across schools and colleges but also extend comprehensive support to startups in the sports sector. The announcement comes amid growing national pride over India’s recent performance at global sporting events and a surge in sports-related entrepreneurship.

Policy Vision And Strategic Goals

The Khelo Bharat Niti 2025 is designed to reshape India’s sporting landscape by focusing on grassroots development, inclusivity, and innovation. PM Modi emphasized that villages, the poor, and daughters are the priority of this policy, reflecting a commitment to democratizing access to sports.

Key highlights from the policy announcement:

Startups in sports management, manufacturing, and technology will receive targeted support
Schools and colleges will embed sports into daily routines to foster early talent
The policy aims to build self-reliance by encouraging youth to use locally made sports equipment
Infrastructure development and competitive leagues will be promoted across rural and urban areas

The policy also seeks to strengthen the sports manufacturing ecosystem, promote sports tourism, and attract international events to India. It encourages private sector participation through public-private partnerships, CSR initiatives, and innovative funding models.

Startup Ecosystem And Economic Potential

India’s startup ecosystem has grown exponentially, with over 1.59 lakh startups recognized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade as of January 2025. The sports sector, though still emerging, is poised for rapid expansion with this new policy support.

Areas of opportunity for sports startups include:

Development of smart training gear and performance analytics tools
Sports event management platforms and athlete wellness services
Manufacturing of eco-friendly and affordable sports equipment
Creation of digital coaching and talent scouting solutions

PM Modi highlighted the importance of self-reliance, stating that the mission gains strength when youth play with self-made rackets, bats, and balls. This aligns with the broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision and the Vocal for Local initiative.

Public Sentiment And Athlete Feedback

The Prime Minister noted that he had received messages from young athletes and their families praising the new policy. Many expressed optimism about the opportunities it would create for aspiring sportspersons and entrepreneurs alike.

Public sentiment included:

Appreciation for the inclusive focus on rural and underrepresented communities
Excitement about the integration of sports into education systems
Hope for better career prospects in sports beyond traditional roles

The policy also builds on India’s recent success at the World Police and Fire Games held in the United States, where Indian athletes won nearly 600 medals and ranked among the top three nations. This performance has further fueled national enthusiasm for sports development.

Next Steps And Public Impact

The launch of Khelo Bharat Niti 2025 marks a pivotal moment in India’s journey toward becoming a sporting powerhouse. By supporting startups and embedding sports into everyday life, the government aims to create a robust ecosystem that nurtures talent, drives innovation, and promotes healthy living.

Immediate actions expected include:

Rollout of funding schemes and incubation support for sports startups
Integration of sports modules into school and college curricula
Establishment of regional sports hubs and training centers
Awareness campaigns to promote participation and entrepreneurship

As India prepares to host the 2029 World Police and Fire Games in Gujarat, the policy sets the stage for showcasing the country’s sporting capabilities and cultural hospitality on a global platform.
