Pritesh Mistry, a 21-year-old biotech engineering student, has won PETA India’s Vegan Fashion Award for Best Innovation in Textiles. His startup, Bioleather, transforms tomato waste into sustainable, cruelty-free leather—offering a stylish solution to food waste and animal harm in the fashion industry.
In a breakthrough for sustainable fashion, Pritesh Mistry, a final-year biotech engineering student, has turned tomato waste into a plant-based leather alternative. His innovation, developed under the startup Bioleather, earned him the prestigious PETA India Vegan Fashion Award for Best Innovation in Textiles.
Inspired by a college project on leather tanning and its environmental impact, Mistry began experimenting with tomato byproducts—India produces over 44 million tons of tomatoes annually, with nearly 30–35% going unsold due to imperfections. His solution not only reduces food waste but also offers a cruelty-free alternative to animal leather.
Notable updates:
Bioleather uses discarded tomato pulp to create durable, biodegradable leather-like material
The product is chemical-free, water-efficient, and designed for scalability in fashion and accessories
PETA India recognized the innovation at the India Fashion Forum 2025 in Bengaluru
Mistry’s work highlights the intersection of biotechnology, sustainability, and ethical fashion
This award marks a significant step in India’s eco-fashion movement, proving that innovation can be both stylish and sustainable.
