Key Takeaways

• Major traffic restrictions and diversions are in effect across Kolkata from July 30 to July 31 to accommodate President Droupadi Murmu’s state visit.

• Police advisories urge residents and commuters to stay updated, use alternate routes, and consider public transport, especially the Metro, to minimize disruptions.

• Several arterial roads and transport hubs will see restricted or staggered access. Special arrangements have been made for emergencies.

Understanding the Scope: Why These Restrictions Matter

President Droupadi Murmu’s ceremonial visit brings Kolkata’s bustling roadways under tight regulation, reflecting both heightened security and the logistical demands of a high-profile dignitary visit. Such events traditionally lead to traffic snarls but Kolkata Police have released detailed advisories to minimize hardship for daily commuters.

What’s Changing: Routes and Areas Affected

Traffic regulations begin on July 30 and extend to July 31, directly impacting prime corridors, including connectivity between the city center, major railway stations, and thoroughfares towards Dakshineswar Temple, where the President is expected to participate in religious ceremonies.

Key Regulation Periods:

• July 30, 4:30 pm to 9:00 pm: Tala Bridge, Bidhan Sarani, Sinthi Crossing, BT Road, and the Shyambazar 5-point crossing see phased closures and restricted movement, especially for vehicles heading towards Esplanade and Central Kolkata.

• Diversions for essential and emergency vehicles are set up, but goods trucks are barred during these hours except for those carrying vital supplies.

Commuter Guide: How to Avoid the Chaos

1. Plan your journey around core restricted zones like Bidhan Sarani, Strand Road, College Street, Amherst Street, Brabourne Road, and Bentinck Street.

2. Vehicles may face redirected or staggered access around Shyambazar, Sealdah, Howrah Bridge, and adjoining stretches leading to the Dakshineswar Temple.

3. Parking bans are in place along Cathedral Road, Lovers Lane, Hospital Road, Casuarina Avenue, and roads adjacent to event venues including Victoria Memorial.

4. Expect total or rolling restrictions on rally/congregation routes; nine major congregation points and their connectors to Esplanade and Red Road will be actively regulated.

Emergency Provisions and Assistance

• Emergency vehicles, public safety, and essential supply trucks (such as LPG, fresh food) will be permitted with escort protocols.

• City police have set up helpline numbers for distressed commuters or accident cases; contact the Kolkata Police control room or dedicated traffic helplines for assistance.

• Real-time traffic bulletins and updates are being disseminated via Kolkata Police’s official social handles and radio broadcasts.

Travel Strategies for Residents and Visitors

• Choose Metro Rail as the first-choice commuting option; it is unaffected by surface-level congestion and is operating at regular frequency.

• Plan essential trips well outside the main restriction windows, or reschedule non-urgent travel to late evenings and early mornings.

• Inform schools, offices, and home-care services of potential delays and work from home or arrange telemeetings if possible.

• Follow advisories broadcast by Kolkata Police, including live reroute information and crowd density alerts.

Community and Security Measures

Large-scale deployment of additional traffic police, RAF, and drone surveillance is in place both for congestion management and anticipatory security. The focus is on crowd control at congregation points and maintaining clear corridors for emergency maneuvering. Public compliance is urged, as last-minute disobedience or ill-timed journeys may lead to both traffic and legal consequences.

Final Thoughts

Kolkata’s urban rhythm faces significant adjustments during President Murmu’s visit, but forethought and real-time vigilance from both authorities and commuters can cushion the impact. Residents are advised to stay patient, follow traffic police directions, and contribute to a safe, seamless state occasion.
