Kolkata’s Metro Makeover: PM Modi to Flag Off Three New Corridors, East-West Line Goes Full Throttle

Kolkata is on the brink of a major urban mobility upgrade as three new metro stretches are set to begin operations, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to inaugurate them on August 22. The long-awaited completion of the East-West Metro corridor, along with new segments of the Yellow and Orange Lines, marks a transformative moment for the city’s transit infrastructure.

Here’s a comprehensive newsletter capturing the latest developments, operational details, and what commuters can expect.

1. East-West Metro: Full Corridor Finally Ready
   - The 2.6 km Esplanade–Sealdah stretch, the final missing link of the East-West Metro (Green Line), is now ready for passenger services
   - Once operational, the full 16.6 km corridor will connect Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V in just 35 minutes
   - The Sealdah–Howrah segment will take approximately 12 minutes, offering a seamless cross-river commute
   - Trains will run every 8 minutes during peak hours and every 10 minutes during off-peak slots
   - The corridor uses a Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) system with Automatic Train Protection Movement (ATPM) software, ensuring high safety standards
   - Trials are underway to upgrade to Automatic Train Operations (ATO), which will reduce travel time by 5–7 minutes and increase frequency

2. Yellow Line Debut: Noapara to Airport
   - The 7 km Noapara–Jai Hind Bimanbandar (Airport) corridor marks the first operational phase of the Yellow Line
   - This stretch will finally connect Kolkata’s metro network to the airport, a long-standing demand from commuters and urban planners
   - The main inauguration ceremony is expected to be held at Jessore Road Metro station, a surface-level stop chosen for security and logistical reasons
   - The corridor will serve as a vital link for air travelers and suburban passengers, reducing dependency on road transport

3. Orange Line Expansion: Ruby to Metropolitan
   - The 4.5 km Ruby–Metropolitan stretch is part of Phase II of the Orange Line
   - This segment will improve connectivity between South Kolkata and the city’s eastern IT and commercial hubs
   - Commuters from the Kavi Subhash (New Garia) line will benefit from easier access to Salt Lake via interchange points like Phoolbagan
   - The new stretch is expected to ease congestion and offer faster alternatives for daily office-goers

4. Inauguration Plans and Security Protocols
   - Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate all three stretches on the morning of August 22
   - Jessore Road station has been selected for the main event due to its surface-level design, which meets PMO’s security requirements
   - Sealdah and Airport stations were considered but ruled out due to their underground layouts
   - Post-inauguration, the Prime Minister will travel to Bihar to inaugurate the 1,320 MW Buxar Thermal Power Plant in Chausa

5. Operational Readiness and Commuter Impact
   - Metro authorities have completed all safety inspections and received clearance from the Commissioner of Railway Safety for the Esplanade–Sealdah stretch
   - The Green Line currently operates 17 six-coach trains manufactured by BEML, with 14 already commissioned
   - The East-West Metro faced delays due to water leakage and soil subsidence since 2019, but is now fully stabilized and ready
   - The new stretches are expected to significantly reduce travel time, improve connectivity, and ease traffic congestion across Kolkata

Conclusion

With three new corridors set to launch, Kolkata’s metro network is entering a new phase of expansion and modernization. The full commissioning of the East-West Metro, along with strategic additions to the Yellow and Orange Lines, promises faster, safer, and more efficient travel for millions. As the city gears up for the Prime Minister’s visit, commuters can look forward to a smoother ride and a more connected Kolkata.
