In a landmark announcement that marks a significant milestone in India’s green mobility and manufacturing journey, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a bold new phase for India’s electric vehicle (EV) industry. The event, held in Hansalpur, Gujarat, unveiled the launch of Maruti Suzuki’s first global strategic Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), the e VITARA, which will now be exported to over 100 countries including advanced markets like Europe and Japan. Complementing this milestone, the inauguration of domestic production of hybrid battery electrodes was also announced, signaling a robust advance towards self-reliance and sustainability in EV manufacturing.

Key Highlights of the Announcement

The e VITARA BEV, made in India, will be exported to 100 countries, marking a new chapter in the global reach of India’s EV industry.

Domestic production of hybrid battery electrodes started at the TDS Lithium-Ion Battery plant, a joint venture between Toshiba, Denso, and Suzuki, increasing local battery value production to over 80%.

This initiative deepens India-Japan economic ties and establishes India as a key hub for EV, semiconductor, and futuristic industry manufacturing.

The Make in India program has created a conducive environment for both global and domestic manufacturers, bolstering India’s ambition to be a global leader in green energy and mobility.

PM Modi emphasized the power of India’s democracy, large skilled workforce, and demographic advantage as pillars driving this green industrial surge.

India’s Emerging Role as a Global EV Manufacturing Hub

The launch event in Gujarat was emblematic of India's vision to evolve into a global electric vehicle manufacturing and export powerhouse. The e VITARA is a premium electric SUV with advanced features including LED lighting, digital instrument panels, touchscreen infotainment, wireless charging, and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Available with lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs in 49kWh and 61kWh capacities, and options for both front-wheel and all-wheel drive, the e VITARA positions India prominently in the competitive global EV landscape.

The start of hybrid battery electrode manufacturing domestically is a strategic leap toward an Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). Up to 80% of the battery value chain will now be fulfilled within India, reducing heavy reliance on imports and bolstering local innovation and production capabilities. This move supports the entire EV ecosystem and is expected to accelerate the scaling of electric mobility nationwide.

Strategic Economic and Technological Implications

This development is part of a broader vision that aligns industrial growth with global environmental priorities. India aims to capitalize on its democratic strengths, advantageous demographics, and rich skilled labor force to foster partnerships and attract investments in clean energy technologies. The launch also reflects close India-Japan cooperation, highlighting joint manufacturing ventures that further technology transfer and economic synergy.

Moreover, India’s automotive manufacturing base, exemplified by Maruti Suzuki’s significant capacity—2.6 million units annually across four plants, robust domestic sales, and growing export volumes—provides a strong foundation for scaling EV production. The government’s aggressive targets, such as achieving 30% electric vehicle sales by 2030, reinforce the urgency and scale of the transition.

Industry Context and Future Outlook

The announcement situates India prominently in the global race toward electric mobility. Indian automakers such as Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki are crafting a unique narrative, combining affordability, toughness, and advanced technology tailored to Indian and global consumers alike. While challenges such as production scale-up, infrastructure development, and global competition exist, India’s momentum in EV innovation is clear.

As India steps into this new era, the mantra “Make in India, Make for the World” captures the ambition to produce world-class electric vehicles that meet rigorous global standards and contribute to a greener planet. The export of EVs to over 100 countries symbolizes not just economic growth but a meaningful contribution to the global climate agenda.

In conclusion, India’s latest initiatives highlight the country’s transformative journey from a domestic manufacturing hub to a global leader in sustainable electric mobility. With supportive government policies, strategic international partnerships, and cutting-edge technology manufacturing, India is set to energize the global EV market with vehicles proudly bearing the “Made in India” tag.
