The tournament will be held in Goa from October 30 to November 27, 2025, bringing an electrifying international sports event to the scenic west coast of India.

Over 200 players from 90+ countries will compete for a prize pool of USD 2 million and three coveted spots in the 2026 Candidates Tournament.

Matches follow an intense eight-round knockout format, with classical games, rapid, and blitz tie-breaks deciding winners in case of draws.

Goa’s vibrant culture, stunning beaches, and warm hospitality complement the excitement of world-class chess battles.

India recently celebrated remarkable achievements in chess: Gukesh Dommaraju crowned World Champion, Indian teams clinched the Chess Olympiad titles in Open and Women’s categories, and Divya Deshmukh’s victory in the Women’s World Cup.

PM’s Vision And Welcoming Statement

Prime Minister Modi tweeted, “India is delighted to be hosting the prestigious FIDE World Cup 2025 and that too after over two decades. Chess is gaining popularity among our youth. I am sure this tournament will witness thrilling matches and showcase the brilliance of top players from around the world.” His words highlight the deepening connection between India and chess and the government’s commitment to nurturing sports excellence across all levels.

Why Goa Was Chosen As The Host City

Initially considered for New Delhi, logistical advantages led FIDE to select Goa, a destination known for its blend of cultural richness and natural beauty. The location offers an exceptional atmosphere for players and fans alike, combining competitive spirit with relaxing surroundings. The choice also signals India’s readiness to host world-class international events in diverse locales.

FIDE’s Endorsement And Global Chess Outlook

Arkady Dvorkovich, FIDE President, praised India’s rise as a chess giant: “India has become one of the strongest chess nations, with outstanding players and passionate fans. After the success of the FIDE Women’s World Cup earlier this year, we are proud to bring the FIDE World Cup to Goa. It will be a celebration of chess and a unique experience for players and spectators from around the world.”

The Federation of Indian Chess (AICF) echoed this enthusiasm with President Nitin Narang calling it a proud moment for Indian chess and a chance to inspire millions nationwide. The event will further cement India’s position as a global chess hub.

Event Format And What To Expect

The knockout format means every match is do-or-die, raising the stakes with each round.

Top 50 seeds join from the second round, intensifying competition as underdogs face off with the world’s best.

The blend of classical, rapid, and blitz formats promises diverse and unpredictable gameplay, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.

The top three finishers will earn coveted spots in the 2026 Candidates Tournament, the gateway to the World Chess Championship.

Looking Ahead: Boost To India’s Sports, Culture, And Youth

This return of the FIDE World Cup to India is more than a sporting event; it symbolizes India’s ascent in global chess, the effective blend of tradition and modernity, and the inspiration for a generation of young players. As chess captures popular imagination, the tournament is expected to spotlight India’s capacity to host premier global competitions with passion, professionalism, and hospitality.
