Apple's move towards internal silicon, led by its M-series processors, is revolutionizing gaming on Macs. With new software such as the Game Porting Toolkit and Game Mode now available on macOS Sonoma, highly optimized games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Baldur's Gate 3 are now running with ease on Apple hardware. Benchmarks show the M3 Max clocking near 90 FPS on high settings, putting it in competition with some gaming laptops.
The M-series chips, specifically the M2 Pro and M2 Max, provide robust performance for AAA titles like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, reaching up to 120 FPS at reduced resolutions. More developers are now porting games to Apple Silicon, which is a seismic shift in Mac gaming.
Though the discrete GPUs of AMD or Nvidia remain ahead of Apple's on-chip GPUs, the difference is diminishing to position Macs as a likely platform for professional gaming.
