Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is set to embark on a high-impact campaign titled 'Vote Adhikar Yatra' from August 17 in Bihar. Spanning over 1,300 kilometers and covering more than 20 districts in approximately 14 days, the yatra aims to raise awareness about electoral roll irregularities and fight to protect the fundamental democratic principle of one person, one vote. The campaign will culminate with a massive rally in Patna on September 1, involving leaders from the INDIA bloc.

Key Highlights of the 'Vote Adhikar Yatra'

The journey begins in Sasaram and traverses crucial districts including Rohtas, Aurangabad, Gaya, Nawada, Bhagalpur, Purnia, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, and West Champaran among others.

The yatra is designed as a direct response to the alleged disenfranchisement caused by the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, which Congress and allied parties claim targets voters unfairly ahead of the assembly elections.

Rahul Gandhi framed the yatra as a fight for the core democratic right: one person, one vote, urging citizens to join the movement to "save the Constitution."

Alongside Rahul Gandhi, Bihar’s opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav and leaders from three Left parties and other INDIA bloc members will participate, demonstrating broad coalition support.

The campaign will include three break days on August 20, 25, and 31, enabling rest and strategic mobilization during the month-long endeavor.

Senior Congress leader Akhilesh Prasad Singh highlighted that the yatra would strengthen democratic participation and expose attempts at vote manipulation.

The initiative addresses concerns voiced by many about the removal of thousands of names from voter rolls, perceived as an effort to suppress votes of marginalized communities including Dalits, minorities, and economically disadvantaged groups.

Public rallies, voter awareness drives, and grassroots engagement form key components of the yatra’s strategy.

Context and Political Significance

The 'Vote Adhikar Yatra' is occurring against the backdrop of heightened tensions over electoral integrity in Bihar, where upcoming assembly elections are pivotal. The Congress-led INDIA bloc highlights their central message as combating “vote chori” (vote theft) and ensuring every eligible citizen retains their right to vote without intimidation or exclusion.

The Election Commission has defended the SIR exercise as a necessary and transparent measure, but opposition parties argue it has systematically targeted opposition voters. Rahul Gandhi’s campaign intends to bring this issue to the forefront of public discourse and mobilize democratic resistance.

Strategic Itinerary and Engagement

The carefully mapped itinerary reflects an intent to reach diverse voter bases, from urban centers to rural hinterlands. It also aims to amplify voices from regions with historically lower voter awareness or higher instances of disenfranchisement.

The concluding Patna rally is expected to be a major political event, drawing support from various opposition parties and signaling a united front.

Call to Action and Democratic Vision

Rahul Gandhi’s messaging emphasizes inclusive democracy, transparency, and citizen empowerment. He calls on people of Bihar to actively protect their constitutional rights and encourage others to participate in this historic democratic movement.

Party spokesperson Pawan Khera described the yatra as a landmark in India’s democratic history, positioning Rahul Gandhi as a leading voice of the marginalized and a guardian of constitutional values.

Looking Ahead

As the yatra unfolds over the coming weeks, its impact on voter turnout, political alliances, and election narratives remains a focal point for observers and participants alike. The campaign’s success in rallying grassroots support could shape electoral outcomes and the future of democratic engagement in Bihar.
