Rain Check! Maharashtra Ghats Stay Under Red Alert as Monsoon Pours On

Swarnadwip Nath Published Aug 20, 2025, 04:43 AM Updated Sep 17, 2026, 07:51 PM

Maharashtra is currently facing severe weather conditions as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the state’s ghat regions, especially Pune, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and parts of Konkan. The alert, valid for the next two days from August 19 to August 21, warns of e...

Key Highlights of the Weather Situation

The Pune ghat areas are experiencing the highest intensity of rainfall, prompting a red alert signaling extremely heavy rain likely to continue for the next 48 hours.

Raigad district is also on high alert with the possibility of intense downpours that could trigger landslides on hilly terrain.

Other regions such as Kolhapur and Satara contend with an orange alert indicating heavy but relatively less severe rainfall than red alert zones.

Mumbai and surrounding districts—Thane, Palghar, and Ratnagiri—are under orange alerts for heavy showers, with some locales already witnessing significant waterlogging and transportation disruptions.

Nashik and Nandurbar ghat regions bear orange alerts, while nearby districts have been placed under yellow alert status, cautioning citizens to be vigilant.

Impact on Public Services and Infrastructure

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) reported that the Monorail service was temporarily halted due to technical issues exacerbated by overcrowding, and fire brigades conducted rescues for stranded passengers.

Flooding and poor drainage have affected local transport, leading to the suspension of some train services in affected areas.

Educational institutions in Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Panvel declared holidays as a precautionary response to the heavy rainfall and resultant disruptions.

Emergency services and disaster response teams have been deployed in vulnerable regions to assist with evacuations, manage relief camps, and prevent loss of life.

Precautionary Measures and Government Advisory

Authorities have urged residents, especially in hilly and low-lying areas, to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors during peak rainfall periods.

The Disaster Management Department has set up helplines and monitoring units to quickly identify and respond to incidents of landslides and flooding.

Citizens are advised to secure loose objects, avoid crossing flooded roads, and maintain communication with local officials for updates.

Farmers affected by ongoing heavy rains face additional challenges with crop damage and are being provisioned support through state-sponsored relief schemes.

Meteorological Outlook and Forecast

Weather models suggest that heavy rains will persist across the Konkan belt and adjoining ghat areas due to a strong monsoon system interacting with local topography.

Temperatures are expected to remain moderate with high humidity levels, maintaining conducive conditions for sustained precipitation.

The IMD cautions that the monsoon rains may see intermittent surges, and preparedness at community and governmental levels is critical.

Community Response and Resilience

Local communities have displayed solidarity by organizing relief efforts and helping vulnerable neighbors.

Environmental experts stress the importance of sustainable land management practices in ghats to reduce landslide risks.

Authorities continue to assess the situation dynamically, balancing immediate response with long-term infrastructural resilience planning.

Conclusion

With the red alert in effect, Maharashtra’s ghat areas face a critical weather challenge in the coming days. Vigilant response by residents, proactive government action, and coordinated emergency services will be key to mitigating the impact of the heavy monsoon rains. Citizens are advised to stay informed and prioritize safety as the state navigates this intense period of rainfall.
