Rajinikanth’s highly anticipated action drama Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, hit cinemas on August 14, 2025, creating a festival-like atmosphere with packed theaters and widespread fan celebrations. Now, viewers eager to watch the film from the comfort of their homes can look forward...

Key Highlights and Streaming Details

Amazon Prime Video has secured the exclusive OTT rights to Coolie for a record Rs 120 crore, making it one of the most expensive Tamil cinema digital deals to date.

The film’s OTT premiere is expected approximately eight weeks after its theatrical release, targeting the Dussehra festival as the streaming launch window to maximize reach and engagement.

This strategic wait aligns with industry norms to balance strong theatrical revenue before wide digital availability, following precedents set by earlier releases.

Coolie will stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video, joining the platform’s extensive library of Rajinikanth’s films, including blockbusters like Jailer, Enthiran, and Baasha.

About Coolie

Rajinikanth plays Deva, a former daily-wage laborer and union leader whose quest to uncover the mystery behind his friend Rajasekhar’s suspicious death plunges him into clashes with a powerful crime syndicate led by Simon Xavier. The film boasts a stellar ensemble including Nagarjuna, Upendra, Aamir Khan (in a striking cameo), Shruti Haasan, and Sathyaraj, alongside captivating action scenes and a gripping narrative screened in Tamil and dubbed into Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi for a pan-Indian appeal.

The Theatrical Festival and Fan Frenzy

Coolie premiered with massive celebrations worldwide, from early morning shows to street rallies, fireworks, and giant cut-outs. Social media platforms exploded with fan videos praising Rajinikanth’s iconic screen presence and Lokesh Kanagaraj’s high-octane direction. The film received a pan-India release, reaching northern parts of India and sparking notable box office success across linguistic and regional markets.

Anticipated OTT Experience

Streaming on Amazon Prime Video will offer fans a chance to revisit the thrilling experience with the convenience of home viewing.

The OTT platform’s high-quality streaming is expected to enhance the visual and audio experience of Coolie’s action-packed sequences.

Additional Content Available Digitally

Before the film’s digital premiere, fans can also watch the ‘Coolie Unleashed’ audio launch event, now available on the SunNXT app via OTTplay Premium subscription. This celebrated event includes speeches, performances, and behind-the-scenes moments that add depth to the Coolie experience.

Industry Context and Precedents

Coolie’s OTT pricing matches the record set by Vijay’s Leo and surpasses other successful Tamil releases like GOAT and Jailer, reflecting the growing value of Tamil cinema in the digital age. The eight-week window also allows theatres to maximize revenue while building anticipation for the online release.

Conclusion

Fans of Rajinikanth’s Coolie can anticipate a rich cinematic journey both on the big screen and soon after at home with Amazon Prime Video. The well-planned staggered release strategy aims to provide an optimal viewing experience while honoring the theatrical run that has set the tone for the film’s success.
