In a landmark move to modernize technical education and align with India’s green energy ambitions, the Maharashtra government has introduced two new vocational courses—Solar Technician (Electric) and EV Mechanic (Electric Vehicle)—across 70 government-run Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs). The initiative, approved by the Directorate General of Training under the Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, is set to begin in the academic year 2025–26.

This strategic curriculum expansion reflects the state’s commitment to sustainable development, employment generation, and industry-aligned skill training.

Key Highlights of the Initiative

- 70 government ITIs across Maharashtra will offer Solar Technician and EV Mechanic courses

- Courses approved by the Directorate General of Training, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship

- Designed to meet rising demand for skilled professionals in solar energy and electric vehicle sectors

- Curriculum developed with input from senior scientist Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar and MITRA CEO Praveen Pardeshi

- Additional approvals will be granted to ITIs that express interest in offering these programs

Why These Courses Matter Now

The introduction of these courses comes at a time when India’s renewable energy and electric mobility sectors are experiencing rapid growth. Maharashtra, being a leading industrial state, is positioning itself to meet the demand for skilled technicians in these emerging fields.

- Solar energy adoption is accelerating across residential, commercial, and industrial segments

- Electric vehicle sales are rising, driven by government incentives and environmental concerns

- Technical manpower is crucial for installation, maintenance, and servicing of solar and EV systems

- These courses will equip students with hands-on skills and industry-relevant knowledge

Curriculum and Training Focus

The Solar Technician (Electric) course will cover:

- Basics of photovoltaic systems

- Installation and maintenance of solar panels and inverters

- Safety protocols and energy efficiency practices

The EV Mechanic course will include:

- Fundamentals of electric vehicle architecture

- Battery management systems and diagnostics

- Repair and servicing of EV components

Both programs will emphasize practical training, with partnerships being formed between ITIs and private industry players to ensure real-world exposure.

Social Empowerment Through Advanced ITI at Chembur

In parallel, the government has approved the establishment of a Government Advanced ITI at Chembur, Mumbai. This institution will focus on empowering Scheduled Caste and Neo-Buddhist communities by offering high-demand courses such as:

- Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician

- Electrician

- Wireman

- IoT Technician (Smart City)

- Electric Mechanic

The Chembur ITI will serve as a model for inclusive skill development, combining technical excellence with social upliftment.

Industry Collaboration and NEP Alignment

The Skill Development Department is upgrading 36 district-level ITIs through collaborations with private industries. These upgrades aim to:

- Enhance infrastructure and training quality

- Align courses with the National Education Policy (NEP)

- Increase employment opportunities through career guidance camps and skill expos

Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha emphasized that the goal is to transform ITIs into high-quality skill development brands that produce future-ready professionals.

Conclusion: A Green Leap for Technical Education

With the launch of Solar Technician and EV Mechanic courses, Maharashtra is taking a decisive step toward building a skilled workforce for tomorrow’s green economy. By integrating sustainability, innovation, and inclusivity into its vocational training framework, the state is not only addressing industry needs but also empowering youth with meaningful career pathways.

As the academic year 2025–26 begins, these 70 ITIs will become hubs of transformation—where students learn to power the future, one solar panel and electric motor at a time.
