In a history-making feat for Indian sports, 19-year-old Divya Deshmukh emerged as the FIDE Women’s Chess World Cup winner in Batumi, Georgia, overcoming legendary compatriot Koneru Humpy in a nail-biting tie-breaker. Her victory not only sent waves of jubilation across the chess community but also came with rare candor: Deshmukh admitted the triumph demanded immense stamina and was fraught with emotional and mental stress, making her achievement even more significant for young aspirants across the country.

Key Highlights from the Tournament Journey

Divya Deshmukh became the first Indian woman to win the FIDE Women’s World Cup, defeating Koneru Humpy in a dramatic final that was decided in rapid tiebreakers after two closely fought classical games ended in draws.

The grueling event, held from July 6 to 28, 2025, saw over 100 of the world’s best compete, including 17 of the world’s top 20 women, making Divya’s win a momentous occasion for Indian chess and women in sport.

With this win, Divya automatically qualified for the 2026 Candidates Tournament and earned the much-coveted Grandmaster title—becoming only the fourth Indian woman and the 88th Indian to do so.

Intense Pressure, Stamina, and Emotional Toll

Divya has been forthcoming about the mental and physical challenges endured during the 22-day-long tournament. She described her experience as “quite stressful” and acknowledged the role of stamina in such protracted competitions. Each day demanded unyielding focus, as the relentless schedule gave little room to relax between rounds.

She emphasized the necessity of resilience, stating that throughout the tournament, one has to consistently show up and perform, regardless of fatigue or nerves. Divya felt the pressure most acutely as the finals approached, admitting to feeling anxious but also determined to make her efforts count given the stage she had reached. She reflected that motivation wasn’t always a constant, yet her resolve not to give up pushed her through the toughest moments.

Turning Points and Mindset

The journey wasn’t without setbacks: after a difficult moment in the second match, Divya confessed to disappointment, especially after missing opportunities in a favorable opening. Nevertheless, her ability to bounce back was a defining factor in her championship run.

Quarterfinals against GM Dronavalli Harika proved particularly crucial. Having already endured several tough matches, overcoming Harika in tightly fought tiebreaks gave Divya the confidence to push forward.

Divya faced Chinese star Tan Zhongyi in the semifinals, a match that further tested her nerves. Her calmness under pressure saw her through to the historic final.

Emotional Rewards and Family Support

The final game was followed by an emotional moment: Divya immediately ran to her mother for a heartfelt embrace. She shared post-match advice received from her mother—have faith in oneself and learn to manage time well. Importantly, Divya revealed she focused on giving her all without obsessing over results, a lesson she credits for her composure throughout the event.

Historic Achievements and Reflection

The win propelled Divya into the elite company of Humpy, Dronavalli Harika, and R Vaishali as India’s female Grandmasters, and only the 44th woman ever to claim the GM title.

The Maharashtra government announced a Rs 3 crore award for Divya, recognizing her unprecedented achievement and the pride she has brought to her state and nation.

Her journey is now celebrated as a symbol of the possibility, dedication, and self-belief that Indian youth can aspire to emulate.
