In a breakthrough collaboration, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has empowered ICICI Lombard, one of India’s leading private general insurers, to implement a fully automated, cloud-native, multi-region disaster recovery (DR) system on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud platform. This cutting-edge disaster recovery architecture enables seamless business continuity by instantly switching IT workloads across geographic regions in the event of service disruptions, ensuring uninterrupted customer service and operational resilience.

Key Highlights Of The Automated Multiregion Disaster Recovery Deployment

Complete Automation: The AWS cloud-native DR setup is fully automated, minimizing manual intervention for failovers and real-time health validation, thereby reducing recovery times.
Multi-Region Resilience: ICICI Lombard’s disaster recovery site on AWS Hyderabad region replicates critical applications and data continuously from the primary Mumbai region, allowing instantaneous failover with zero data loss.
Domain-Based Routing: Seamless environment switching is enabled through domain-based routing, supporting uninterrupted customer access during failover scenarios.
Coverage Of Critical Applications: The DR system includes all business-critical application workloads, database servers, and IT infrastructure integral to ICICI Lombard’s operations.
Use Of AWS Native Services: Technologies such as AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery (EDR), AWS Step Functions, and infrastructure-as-code tools form the backbone of the automated disaster recovery processes.
Record-Breaking DR Drill: ICICI Lombard successfully executed a full-site DR drill, signifying its readiness to maintain business operations without interruption in unforeseen circumstances.

Strategic Importance For ICICI Lombard And BFSI Sector

ICICI Lombard’s investment in automated disaster recovery represents a benchmark achievement in the insurance industry, addressing rising regulatory and customer demands for enhanced business continuity. By leveraging advanced cloud technologies and automation, the company reinforces its commitment to safeguard mission-critical workloads against climate-related, technological, or cyber disruptions that could affect service delivery. This pioneering move also positions ICICI Lombard as a digitally resilient insurer ready for the challenges of an increasingly uncertain operational environment.

Role Of TCS In Enabling Business Continuity

TCS played a pivotal role in architecting, implementing, and supporting end-to-end cloud migration and disaster recovery automation for ICICI Lombard. Leveraging its deep domain expertise and AWS partnership, TCS designed a scalable and secure disaster recovery framework tailored to ICICI Lombard’s complex requirements. This includes streamlining environment replication workflows, automating validation processes, and integrating monitoring systems to ensure real-time DR readiness.

ICICI Lombard’s Journey Towards Cloud-Native Transformation

The insurer’s disaster recovery upgrade is part of a broader digital transformation journey that began almost a decade ago, with a progressive shift to public cloud platforms. Migrating core production systems to AWS enabled the company to leverage scalable computing, advanced analytics, and AI/ML-powered services for customer experience enhancements. The new automated DR system complements these efforts by ensuring high availability and regulatory compliance while supporting innovative insurance products and services.

Benefits Of The Automated DR Framework

Reduced Recovery Time Objective (RTO) ensuring faster application recovery during disruptions.
Continuous data replication supporting near-zero data loss.
Enhanced operational agility and better resource utilization through automation.
Improved regulatory compliance and risk management in line with insurance sector mandates.
Increased customer trust through guaranteed uninterrupted service availability.
Cost effectiveness by leveraging cloud-native technologies and pay-as-you-go disaster recovery solutions.
