A groundbreaking study published in the Journal of Threatened Taxa has unveiled one of the most comprehensive avifaunal checklists for Telangana, documenting 452 bird species across the state’s diverse habitats. Led by Professor Chelmala Srinivasulu of Osmania University and citizenscientist Sriram Reddy of Hyderabad Birding Pals, the research combines decades of fieldwork, historical record reviews, and communitycontributed data to spotlight Telangana’s rich and often overlooked birdlife.

Key Highlights from the Study:

The checklist includes firstever India records such as the Spurwinged Lapwing, a species previously undocumented in the country
Globally threatened birds like the critically endangered Indian Vulture and the Lesser Florican were also recorded
The study spans habitats ranging from wetlands and forests to grasslands and urban lakes, correcting outdated records and revealing hidden biodiversity hotspots

Methodology and Community Involvement:

The research is the result of longterm collaboration between professional biologists, amateur birders, and platforms like eBird and iNaturalist
Field observations were conducted across multiple districts, supported by verified sightings and historical literature
The authors emphasized the role of citizen science in enriching ecological data and fostering public engagement

Conservation Urgency and Policy Recommendations:

The study warns of declining bird populations due to habitat loss, pollution, pesticide use, and urbanization
Researchers urge policymakers to prioritize habitat identification and integrate bird conservation into local and statelevel planning
The authors advocate for nurturing a new generation of bird lovers through education and community outreach

Public Engagement and Cultural Impact:

The checklist is designed not just for scientists but for students, nature enthusiasts, and amateur birdwatchers
Birdwatching is positioned as a meaningful connection to natural heritage, encouraging curiosity and environmental stewardship
Osmania University has lauded the study as a passionate and publicrelevant contribution to Indian ornithology

Looking Ahead:

This landmark documentation sets a baseline for future avian research and conservation efforts in Telangana. It also serves as a call to action for citizens, educators, and policymakers to recognize birds as vital indicators of environmental health and to protect the ecosystems they inhabit.
