Three New Metro Lines, One City Transformed: Kolkata’s New Routes Are Coming Soon

Swarnadwip Nath Published Aug 22, 2025, 08:26 PM Updated Sep 16, 2026, 11:09 AM

Kolkata Metro is about to get a big expansion with three new metro lines coming up soon. This will make it easier for people to get around the city and cut down on traffic jams. The new lines will cover important parts of Kolkata, connecting suburbs, business districts, and growing neighborhoods....

Where The New Lines Will Go

The three new lines will add around 45 kilometers of track in total. One line will connect the southern suburbs to the city center, passing through places like Andul, Santragachhi, and Howrah. Another line will link the northern parts of Kolkata with the IT hubs in Salt Lake and New Town. The third line will create an east-west corridor from Dum Dum in the north to Behala in the south. These new lines will also connect well with the current metro network, making it easy to switch between lines.

What To Expect At The Stations

There will be more than 30 stations across these new lines. Each station will have features like escalators, elevators, good security, and accessibility for people with disabilities. Some stations will be designed as interchange points so commuters can switch lines without much hassle. They will also have parking spots and real-time travel updates. The stations are planned to be eco-friendly with things like solar power and rainwater harvesting built in. Plus, some stations will have shops and food outlets to make waiting more comfortable.

Ten Important Things About The New Metro Lines

Construction should start by the end of 2025, with sections opening gradually over the next five years.
The project is backed by funding from both the state and central governments, along with help from international organizations.
The total length of all three new lines combined will be about 45 kilometers.
The trains will run frequently and can handle lots of passengers during busy times.
Average train speeds should be between 35 and 40 km/h, so travel times will improve a lot.
The metro might introduce driverless trains and newer signaling technology to keep things safe and efficient.
Building and station operations will focus on reducing environmental impact, including using solar energy and managing waste carefully.
The new lines are expected to boost local economies and real estate around the stations.
Stations will make sure that elderly and differently-abled passengers can travel easily.
The project will create many jobs during construction and once the metro is running.

What This Means For Kolkata

This expansion will make a real difference in how people move around Kolkata. The metro will ease traffic on roads and reduce pollution. It will also save people time. Plus, it supports the city’s goal to build in a more eco-friendly way and keep up with modern infrastructure needs.

What’s Next For Commuters

Once these lines are built, traveling to work, school, or just getting around will be simpler for a lot of people. The government will need to make sure buses and other transport connect well with the metro to make these new lines useful right to the last mile. Keeping everyone updated on progress will be important too, so commuters know what to expect.

In Short

Kolkata’s new metro lines will soon open up more parts of the city, making daily travel easier and better. The project combines new stations, faster trains, and better connections to serve a growing city. It’s a big step forward for everyone who lives, works, or visits Kolkata.
